Stammer Stories: Jaipur Communication Workshop ~ Sunoy Garai

I am a male PWS. I was born in 1996, now 20 years old. My parents originated from Shanti Niketan, West Bengal and are currently living in Gurgaon. Currently I am pursuing hotel management from Instiute of Hotel Management, Pusa, New Delhi.
For the first time in my life I realised that I was a stutterer when in 5th standard my teacher asked to recite a poem from a book. I realised that some words didn’t come out smoothly as they were used to before. The teacher asked me if I was nervous. But frankly, I wasn’t. I just went home and realised how much of an issue this can be.
Years passed and life went on and I just grew up with mild stuttering but was able to participate in an extempore or speech competitions and even won a few of them. After my secondary exams I changed my school. The people were new there and I felt lonely. I was slowly becoming an introvert person as I hesitated to speak to the new faces as I feared that they might judge too quickly. I made a couple of friends but was never the first one to start a conversation.
Two years went quite lonely for me as there was almost no interaction with any of my classmates and I always chose the corner seat where I would not be disturbed. My practical board exams got start and I was preparing for them. Things were going well until the viva. The viva I something like they are throwing stones at you and you have to dodge them. It was tougher for me than any theory exam. The teacher divided the students in groups with each of them having 5 students. When my group’s turn came I was the first one and I knew what I would be going through. The teacher asked all of us to tell the names. I stuttered in my name but somehow got it out. It was my turn and the teacher asked me question. I stuttered horribly and wasn’t even able to complete a whole sentence. The teacher asked me to have a glass of water and come back later. I went outside to drink water and I was thinking that when did I become like this. I was shocked to my core. I came back later and the teacher suggested to the take the viva with only me and not in any group. I agreed. He asked if I was nervous and uncomfortable. I was but I told him I wasn’t. He just told me to relax and answer the questions. Somehow I managed to complete the viva and the teacher wished me to do well in my life and not care about what people say.
After a few months, I moved to college. It was a new chapter of my life and I was afraid that the same would happen in college knowing what happened in school. On the first day itself, I made new friends and I always initiated the conversations. They asked if I had some problem in speaking and I frankly told them that I am a stutterer.
During my second year I noticed a boy was stuttering while ordering something from the canteen. I went upto him and asked if he was also a stutterer. He smiled and said yes. We became buddies after that. One day he said that he found a website which helps people overcome there stutter. We found a contact number from the website and we did not call but messaged, because of obvious reasons and found out that he was the admin of TISA Delhi SHG group. Soon we got the details and attended the first meeting and we were surprised that there were so many people like us. After that we attended some meetings and we felt much better and our morale was quite good.
The college was the best part of my life until the campus placements started. I always kept quiet in Group Discussions and was mostly out of the first round itself. One of my subject teacher told me that I should speak in Group Discussions as the panel won’t know that I stutter until I speak.
He even made me practice to speak in GD’s. Many companies came and I tried hard but couldn’t clear the GD’s. My first break came when Burger King came for placements and I was selected for the Panel Interview. I was nervous but happy. My interview went good and I wasn’t nervous as they already knew that I stuttered. The result came out the next day and I was selected. I couldn’t believe
that I was selected. I informed my parents and they were very happy and proud of me.
My college is about to get over and I have my final exams in May. After that I would be joining Burger King and finally I feel that I have achieved something inspite of the fact that I am a stutterer and it makes me feel very proud.

Stammer Stories: Jaipur Comm WS: Atul Singh Sainger

Hello all! I developed stammer when I was in 3rd or 4th standard. And by 6th I became fulltime stammerer. Bunking schools in oral tests, persuading friends to attend my roll call, Literally avoiding each&every situation where I have to use my speech. Became quite silent person, cause I know if I’ll speak I’ll stammer, and if’ll stammer rest of the world with their arsenal to fire their advices, cures, “Nuskha’s”, and more over their tease. I was just fed up with everyday advices like be confident, don’t get nervous, pull your tongue, stretch it (like it’s a rubber band huhh).
I grew up with advices like”muh me kalimirch rakha karo” & all that crap. By the time i passed +2 I became quite a stubborn. Since I joined TISA in august 2014, and met with Sachin Sir, my perception towards my stammering changed completely. I no longer feel as stammering is a problem for me. Its more like a part of me. I have many awsm frnds like any other random guy, I enjoy life like any other random guy and the best part is people focus on what I say cause of its content & not how I speak. Stammering also helped me improving my writing skills. Yes It may sound funny but due to my stammer only I focused very much on what to say and which word/language to use, so much so that I can now proudly say that I'm an okay okay type poet/shayar or whatever.... The point is I feel that It is because my stammering only that I am the Atul singh which u all know. If I wouldn't stammer I might have been a completely different person and might be not better than I am today. Stammering not only effects your speech, It effects your thoughts, your body language, your nature and in my case your soul too. I feel like me and my stammering are kind of made for each other. We often compete with each other , every time I have to give any presentation in my Institute.  And I quite enjoy that.

English translation to this news article...Article named as "Stammering....becomes nothing, it transforms to smaller one..."
In this highly competitve world, communicating our thoughts is more important. So if a person has stammering than it is difficult. So to face the world with great confidence TISA was established. It is self help group.
TISA was started by Dr.Sachin Srivastava from Dehradun. He himself was a PWS. To make other PWS live with confidence and live without fear this self help group was established.
He met many people in exploring stammering.
He has learnt new lessons from associations so he wanted happen to all other people.
By sharing feelings and learning new lessons from associations is the main idea of Sachin.
In 2002 he started a blog for writing on stammering and he supported others to write blogs and their feelings.
All the bloggers who are early members first met in 2006. It is then TISA was chalked out for bigger steps. Now it is in many places of India.

Stammering .. Disability or Not??..let us re-consider our views.

Guys I have written an article to support stammering as disability. These are my personal beliefs and and I used somewhere critic language. So ..please dont mind...Next time writing any post I will be more polite.
Pls give your valuable replies in Comment box.

A section of stutters agrees being branded as disabled as they are able to benefit from it, where as other section do not agree as they do not feel good to get recognized themselves as Disabled.

I am writing this article to support stammering as disability.Initially I was against to be called as  “Disabled.” Then I thought in wider perspective. I realized that it is needed to declare stammering as  disability. We can give a speech on positive thinking ,body language or have an positive idea about our  stammering .But when we talk about all these things, we actually talk about a few PWS connected to TISA like  SHGs and who are mild stutters. There may not be a recognizable connection between success and  stammering but its only true in case of mild stuttering.Let us think in broader perspective. We are 700-800  PWS, if we combine both TISA and Yahoo PWS group, In which hardly 200 PWS are active. In an  estimation about 1 Crore stutters are there in India.  If we compare this number to our active members than  its much high. We should take any decision taking care of majority. The PWS who are not attached to any  SHG movement living a mysterious life thinking that one day someone will come to hold their finger .They are  not so internet friendly to know about our group. If we talk about awareness than it will take long-long time to  do that with our limited resources. In this time period lakhs of our stutter friends will die in darkness. Making  one life better is making whole humanity

Some more fun..

Ishan shares a funny moment... Pramendra and Amit do an interesting role play- sharing the funny problems of real life situations. BTW, TISA does not operate any airlines.. not yet!
I wish I could have spent more time in one to one counselling sessions with everyone. I tried it with some participants. So, you are welcome to get in touch through emails and let us continue our discussion, which just began in those three days. As I said, it is a long journey and 3 day workshop was only to give you a start, a bearing. Attend local SHG. Start one, if there is none in your town. Keep in touch with others and pick up whatever is of your particular need and interest. Above all, remember "communication" is of more meaning than fluency...
All the best, friends!

Comm WS Day 1

This is a brief report. About twenty people gathered on time in Anugrah. Some old and some new faces. The workshop was inaugurated by Mr Robert, who heads Community Health department of Herbertpur Christian Hospital. We thanked him for extending the use of premises for this workshop. We played out some interactive fun exercises for introduction. Some fun energisers too- like double speed bole bum. In two sub-groups we discussed and practised: cancellation, eye contact, pausing, prolongation, bouncing. Then we did a very intuitive and interesting exercise: Stammering Interviews. We stammered a lot, we laughed a lot and we learned a lot. We will be sharing a brief bio of participants soon. Here are some "nice" moments..

If You didn't see a Miracle,You try to become One Miracle

Dear All, this post aims at people who are feeling shy, feeling low or confused to talk. Even though still I stutter but not anymore with shyness and in confusion. I am trying to accept that its my way of talking, Yes I stutter so WHAT !!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me begin with a fact "Stammering can be dissolved from your speech IF YOU TRY"
There are people who were stammerers in past and got cured.
To mention a few Dr.Sachin ji and Hrithik Roshan.
Do you know people in history who Stammer?
Famous Scientists( "Isaac Newton", "Charles Darwin", "Albert Einstein") the count goes on in every field. You name it,we are there in that field.
I request you to see the all videos which I refer in this post.

What about people who are dumb by birth, What shall they do? Have they given up?

We shall be thankful to God at least as we are not dumb by birth but we stammer, thats at We just only Stammer. What about people who dont have limbs at all right from their birth or lost them in middle of life? Have they given up?
God had a plan for us :) So we are born of Stammering. We are given a chance to write our life.We have a chance to turn into normal fluent speakers.
We are stutterers not sinners.Stuttering is not a crime Its just another way of talking or speaking.
We face many challenges daily in speaking, Did you ever thought how strong we became by now facing all such scenarios through out our life?
Yes we have become strong already but fact is we didnt realize that strongness in us!!!
Looking in mirror ?
Yes its you who crossed these many years with stammering and still counting. You have that strong and boldness but please also have a hope which will dissolve stammering one day.
We are already strong equal to ocean's strenght. Like a stone wall :)

Remember there were no words in stone age, only gestures were there.
There were no words like God, Mom, Dad at that age, It is we who created words, sounds and languages. At that stone age time only Smile, Love, Anger, Hunger ,Cry and Courage Hunt were words for communication or gestures or languages to express.
Speech is one way of different communications which we have, we can have many other ways to communicate. Where there is a will there is way :)
What do you say seeing this video???
Hasn't  he excelled his way???

Ok all these above videos say that they are disabled. If disabled persons can do these many miracles.
What about us?
If we target a little hope, a small hope in our minds, What can we do?
If we Invest a small hope then we can surely see miracles in our lifes.

Did you ever read in news that Cancer was cured without radiation or chemotherapy?
Yes there are many people in world who got cured from cancer, they are just cured because they have medicated with only confidence, only with self help. So when there was no hope of medication for cancer then the hope of self confidence has done miracles for them. If a monster like cancer itself left the body why can't stammering go away?

Have you ever stuttered in a place where no one present around you or have u stuttered when talking to yourself?
The answer would be no :) So we are not having a speech disorders. We are just Trans-Fluencers. That means not fluent completely but we are fluent to some percent and we can turn into fluent speakers with a good workouts. Not the workouts at gym :) The workouts with your Hope and Confidence in Life.

Don't get depressed or give up for not speaking 100% fluently.
Try to be 1% fluent today, try to see 1% hope and confidence today.
Try to add 1% to all the above things and one day you will see all becoming 100% if not 100 at least 99, Its a good percent sill. Something is better than nothing right?

So let me welcome you to the truth for life in our Stammerers.
Yes only Hope is truth and only Confidence is our air to live.

------------------------------------Join SHG to feel the Hope---------------------------------------.
I suggest you to join SHG(self help group) in your city, where a group of stammerers arrive at a place and exchange many things in their life.We share truth, hope, confidence and tips to overcome stammering.
One becomes teacher to others over here. We get inspired by others and we inspire others. You help others and others help you. This is what Self Help Group means.
Together we Stand up and Together We Succeed.
You can find in below link where we have SHGs in various cities of India.
