Mohit Takes Off..!

I was elated to receive a text message from Dr. Mahapatra from IHS, which said:

Did Mohit Jaiswal tell you he got a job due to his confidence in the National Conference? First Success Story you need to celebrate”.

Yes, we need to celebrate! Just goes to show that meeting and sharing can do wonders. I am sure each one of us who participated has a story to tell post the event. While some of us revived the SHGs in our respective towns and attended in big numbers, some started blogging about their experiences. Sumeet shared about being associated with an NGO, and Pawas is spreading awareness on stammering in the HR world. And now, we have the first success story from Mohit Jaiswal – a young and candid NIT student from Kharagpur. First of many more to come...

Keep sharing your experiences after the National Conference, and as we do it, let us all wish Mohit all the very best for his first job and all his future endeavours. Hearty Congratulations to Mohit from TISA!

For people staying in Hostel at NC

Thank you Mr.Sunda for the mail.
Hostel accommodation can be organised by the superviser Balaram Nayak, Ph:9090909503
Institute of Health Sciences is located at CHANDAKA. That means Chandaka village, Chandaka Police station, Chandaka Post office, Chandaka Institutional Area, Mouza: Chandaka, .........ha..ha.....
The only problem reaching IHS, at Chandaka is, it is not connected by public transport system ( town bus). Anyone gets down at the Railway station will have to hire an Auto Rickshaw, charges could be up to Rs.200/-. Route landmark is Railway station..Baramunda Fire station.. Bharatpur.. Andharua.. .Chandaka.
As such, when we are hosting the event, even my cell no should be available with most delegates. I will take care, when my staff make some lapses...

Keith Calling..

My very dear TISA friends,

Many journeys are planned in advance. Some journeys do not start, because there are no people willing or able to take that very necessary first step. Until 2006 there was no effective central place in India for people who stammer to get together to talk about issues in every day life relating to stammering and ask for help. Some of you took part in the yahoo group IndianPWS. But many Indians emailed the International Stuttering Association (ISA) and other National Associations (BSA, NSA etc.) asking for help. In 2006, the vision of The Indian Stammering Association (TISA) was formed. In five and a half short years you have moved from the yahoo group, IndianPWS (still going strong), to holding a National Indian Conference linked with the IHS. Outstanding.

Lessons from NSA..

I was advised by a friend to check out old NC of NSA, for more ideas. Granted that there are many differences between TISA and NSA, here is what I discovered and was positively impressed by.

The sessions they plan are many, diverse, cater to different age groups and often run parallel. This offers choices to audience. For example look at this "day at a glance" from their four day NC 2011. There is a good mix of interesting topics and speakers instead of constant preoccupation with just therapy and "is there a cure?". Look at these  topics, which are bound to be of great interest to young pws:
1. Falling in Love with a Person who Stutters (Maria Dowling)
2. When a Covert and Overt Marry (Hannah Laday)
3. How to find a job (or simply advance your career) (Jeff Goodman)

Then, they have something for families too:
4. Cattle call! (families meet on 1st Floor outside Trinity Ballroom Foyer)

And they have sessions by practicing SLPs too:
5. CEU: You are Changed by What you Do (Vivian Sisskin)

They have something for chapter leaders too, since NSA runs 100 (yes, HUNDRED) self help groups across USA! That is where their ideas, support and participation comes from. If population were a criteria, we should have four times that ie. 400 functioning SHGs in India!

So, how do they do all this? I think one secret is Self help groups, Therapists (represented by ASHA), Families, Children- all come together and collaborate in a big way. They forget their differences and come together for a BIG effort in the larger interest. People, organisers as well as busy Clinicians, give commitment of time well in advance. Participants too register well in advance (-large numbers from 100 SHGs) so that organizers know the number of young children, adolescents, adults, family members well in advance and are able to plan content and logistics WELL.For example, the 2011 NC was attended by 870 participants, of which 300 were the first timers! Wow!
Well I have learned a lot! Thank you NSA! Here is a video from 2011 Texas NC:

NC 2nd Round: Expectations

This is a run up to NC- collecting "expectations" from ALL the participants. Once we have a SENSE of expectations, we will be able to utilize our resources (esp. time) accordingly, so that all participants can get an "optimum" experince out of this first collective effort at national level. Here is Harish, our inhouse editor. We will keep adding more at the bottom, as we keep getting these notes from participants.

Un-official FAQ for NC

A young reader has send us this FAQ. Hesays that TISA is not able to answer REAL questions in a way that isunderstood by common people. Therefore, he took the trouble ofdeveloping this FAQ. TISA takes no responsibility and apologizes inadvance if it offends some.

FAQ by a young reader

1. How will conference benefit me? ME,not TISA?
You will meet many stammerers just likeyou. So far you have grown up thinking that only YOU talk funny, thatonly YOU are weird.. When you meet room full of weirdos, your Farakkadam of pent up feelings will burst: you will stammer like hell, youwill laugh and cry like a Bollywood starlet, but you will have aRELEASE lasting for a long long time..

A True Teacher : M S Rathore

It was heartening to see the KBC episode with Mahendra Singh Rathore from Panna, Madhya Pradesh. A lot of issues faced by the people who stutter came forth as this episode progressed. Hats off to Rathore for having the courage to accept and talk about his stammering.

Need company to Bhubnaeswar!!

Now its Dhruva, Me, Sumit and his parents travelling on 26th December 2011; I am looking at a figure of 20 stammerers traveling together from Delhi to Bhubnaeswar, We will take over a bogie :-)

My TRAIN tickets to Bhubnaeswar are booked as follows (for Third AC):

1. 26th December 2011 (New Delhi to Bhubnaeswar): Bhubnaeswar Rajhani (Train no : 22812)
2. 2nd January 2012 (Bhubnaeswar to New Delhi): BBS RAJDHANI EX (Train no: 22823)

Scholarships for NC

Dear coordinators and members,

TISA has some spare funds from our coomunication workshops in Pune, Chandigarh and Delhi, which we intend to use to pay the registration fees for students and unemployed individuals. Also we have subsidized accommodation @ Rs 100 per day per person for around 8 - 10 people. Please pass on this information so that such individuals can be helped. If you find someone who is not able to attend the NC due to lack of money, please contact us at info@stammer.in

JP
