Invent Role: Create Opportunities

Many of us, after desensitization and having learned a few techniques, often wonder: What next? Where do I go and practice my new communication skills? Many pws keep waiting for the “right opportunity”. Some, smart ones, create these opportunities by inventing a social role for themselves.

Pankaj, a young man from Almora, has done Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and is now preparing for competitions. I met him a year ago- then again, he visited me at SMTA sometime back. We discussed a few basic ideas about stepping out of comfort zone. He was also active in MOOC 3 then.
Then, as it happens frequently, we lost touch; we were busy in our own mad worlds. Yesterday, I received a phone call from him, followed up by some pictures on whatsapp. He had followed ONE idea to its fruition.
After Pulwama tragedy, he contacted local traders, shop keepers, cab drivers in his little sleepy (but picturesque!) town (Bagwali Pokhar) and organized an awareness rally about the need to support our defense forces and to be vigilant about terrorism in the country. To his surprise, he discovered that local schools supported his initiative whole-heartedly and the students were happy to take out a rally. Day after day, he noticed a change in his communication style. He was more confident, he was taking quick decisions and he was speaking in public at last! (He can be seen in a blue shirt, with a megaphone in his hands in the top picture!)

Above all, he felt that he was connected to an idea bigger than himself. He was feeling happy and fulfilled. No therapy, could have given him this feeling and this sense of achievement and Self-confidence- he was convinced.
How did he do this? He identified a social need, he created a role for himself and stepped into it, without worrying about - “Mujhe kya milega?” (What will I get out of this?).
If we look around ourselves, Life is offering us many such opportunities to help and serve others every day. Why wait? Look carefully at your neighborhood, your office, your city. Surely someone needs your skills, your help. Jump into it with joy. This is your McMera Program - 100 percent free and 100 percent effective.

Positive and Inspiring!

Friends, here is a beautiful true account of a police officer overcoming stammering in USA. Some of the lessons, I learned at once in this inspiring story are:
1. Ken drew his inspiration through physical fitness. Reaching a high level of fitness, boosted his self-esteem and inspired him in his "speech area" as well...
2. He had a life long dream of becoming a police officer. But in addition to "dreaming", he did a lot of hard work to realise his dream.
3. He gives credit where it belongs - his wife, Dr Martin Schwarz (who visited Chennai sometime back), other mentors, seniors, friends in his life.
4. He does not claim that he is "cured". He says he has overcome it.
5. He does not hide his stammering past- but goes ahead and gives inspiring sessions to college students about "communication", tries to help other pws..
6. Instead of being satisfied with his own success and sitting back, he gives back to society by doing various services as a volunteer.
Wow- All power to you, Officer!

A long journey

Recovery from stuttering mindset is a long - long journey. Why this is so? Why cant 10 sessions with a therpaist or a two week course help? Because underlying beliefs and values take a lot of time to change. For example, you may read somewhere: "Stammering is cool". You may intellectually understand it but it will take some of us months to understand what is really cool about stammering! Having understood it, then- going out and ACTING it out will take some more time! This is why one needs to have the mindset of an 18th century explorer, like Marco Polo or Dr Lingstone or Fahyan: "I am a traveler- on a long long journey. I will explore many things about myself. I will not be in a big hurry to reach point X and return home promptly. I will enjoy every moment of challenges and discovery along the way.."

But there are milestones, which let you know that you ARE progressing- not standing still or treading a mill. One such important milestone is: when you are able to talk about stammering- comfortably, with spontaneity, while facing a camera! Listen to Kundan, a young engineering student talking about his journey and what helped him forward, how he dealt with his biggest fears, his victories and debacles.. Young students will easily relate to him, as he talks about his battles during roll call.. and the solution he came up with! TISA encourages other pws too, to share their stories with us, in any format. This can be therapeutic, totally safe and free. And COOL!

Want to quit? wait a minute..

"..Why I stammer, why i become a stammerer amongst all my cousins and friends-- this thought is coming continuously to me? What is the process of desensitization? how can I remove the thought for the time being that I am a stammerer which is constantly hovering around me. I just want to be out of this three year program. I have not been able to study and 2 exams are starting from next week (midterm). I accept my stammering but I dont love it ...life has become a hell. I am planning to quit.."

Dont Back Out After You Corner Your Stammer

The one thing that I have observed about myself as a person who stammers is that whenever I have tried to make changes in my life and attitude about my stammering,my stammer has always increased manifold. It increases to such an altitude that I start to block even in comfortable situations and with relatively easy words.
