Shame and embarrassment needs to be conquered to have total acceptance of ourselves with our stammering. How total acceptance of stammering will come if we are not open towards our stammering? The acceptance needs to be achieved at physical and emotional levels. Behaviours like looking down, substituting words or avoidance needs to be stopped if we have totally accepted our stammering. Acceptance is not accepting your stammering and doing nothing about it, but rather it is to stop hiding our stammering and not to pretend that we have no problem. It is like confronting your problem straight in open space.
How we can conquer our fears for stammering if we are not willing to put ourselves in uncomfortable speaking moments? The more we try to resist or hide our stammering the more strongly it hits us. Instead better way can be to accept and love stammering, so that we can fluently stammer. Bouncing is a technique that helps us to stammer softly in an easy way. This technique needs to be done first on easy words and then we can apply to difficult words. Bouncing also helps to release the tension when we expect ourselves to speak fluently in a situation. Pausing, prolongation and having sufficient breath before speaking also helps in increasing the fluency.
The goals for me are to stammer easily, seeing in the eyes of other person while I stammer and to become aware of what I do when I get stuck in a word. Let’s start the job to accept and love stammering.
