Golkonda to Guangzhou!

Golkonda to Guangzhou!
And back: Journey of a seeker..

Dhruv Gupta was born in Hyderabad yet left India at the ripe age of 10 months! He lived his early years in Bangkok, Manila, Hong Kong. It was in Hong Kong in grade 3 where he first began to notice his stammer. Then, he moved again to Kobe in Japan where stammering began to control period of his life in the classroom - while raising his hand to answer question and talking to friends. However, he always tried his best to focus on school work and did very well in school. Over the school years, he tried everything he could to avoid stammering - not raising his hand in class, switching words, avoiding talking - which were socially and academically hurtful decisions. In Grade 8, he decided to challenge himself by signing up for a speech class. The class was probably the toughest class for him, and he remembers feeling hurt after one speech and making a promise to himself that he will do all he can to help other people who stammer - no one should ever go through the pain that he is going through. Keep in mind he still had not meant anyone who stammered and did not even really know what to call this different way of speaking.

He received speech therapy in Mumbai one summer which probably changed his life. The speech therapist suggested that the main problem was speaking too fast and that if Dhruv wanted he could speak fluently. This led to a strongly incorrect self-belief that stammering is wrong, and that it his fault that he is still stammering. This pushed Dhruv to hide his stammering even more and try every method possible to speak ‘fluently’.

At the end of 10th grade, Dhruv moved to Guangzhou, China, where he tried to have a fresh start. He believed that nobody here knew he stammered, so he would just try his best to hide it. He would try to speak fast so as to get all words out, speak when he knew he could be ‘fluent’, change words and avoid situations. This worked for him for awhile, and he soon made a new group of friends. However, avoiding situations played on his self-confidence and belief system that there were somethings he couldn’t do.

He graduated and attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Here he continued to hide his stammering and do all he could to prove that he was ‘fluent’ & confident. He soon made a group of friends who stuck with him throughout his university life. After a fun-filled freshman year, he began to feel the pressure of classes and specifically class-room presentations. He did all he could to avoid presentations & group projects but there were some projects he just could not avoid. He decided to take a speech class in his second semester of sophomore year. He had a tough time in the class and found it difficult again to give speeches. Still at this point, he had not met anyone else who stammered, so he believed he was the only one with this problem and he still could not specifically name it. He had no clue why he would get stuck on some words as he did.

He went through a very rough path his sophomore year into this junior year where he felt like he wasn’t good enough. He became very reserved and would hardly speak to his roommates. Everyone saw that he had changed, but he did not share with anyone expect one very close friend, what he was going through. All his friends thought that maybe he didn’t like them anymore or his personality had changed into being a rude person as he was secretly afraid to speak in front of them.

In junior year, he met a friend who he saw had a similar difficulty while speaking. He would block on a certain word. He instantly felt a connection with this person and they became life-long friends. He tried to attend speech therapy at the University of Illinois and went to a group session. However, after attending just the one group session he rejected the idea of returning harnessing a self-belief that he did not have the same problem as them.

In his senior year, he scrambled to attend career fairs and attend job interviews. However, partially because of the economic downturn in 2009 and his chosen major of Corporate Finance, and his self-belief that he was unable/not good enough to work anywhere - he found it hard to find a job.

He returned home in May 2009 after graduating with a B.S. in Finance, and began to search for a job in Guangzhou, China. At this time, his father had opened up a Vaastu, an Indian restaurant in Guangzhou. He had helped with the design and construction of the restaurant during his summer vacation in 2008. His father was having troubles with their then manager and asked Dhruv if he would like to join in the business. Dhruv at first hesitated, as this was not his dream (although at that point he wasn’t very clear of his dream) yet after considering it he felt he would feel proud to help his father. He joined Vaastu at the General Manager in July 2009 and underwent 1 month of training under the GM who was about to leave. From August ’09 - March ’11 he put his heart into the restaurant and it won Guangzhou’s Best Indian Restaurant award in 2009 & 2010. However, in March 2011 the restaurant was forced to shut down because the Chinese landlord had decided to reinterpret the contract and they began a legal battle.

Dhruv was convinced that he had to open Vaastu again as soon possible. After it became clear that the restaurant in it’s current location would be unable to open, he began to search for new restaurant venues. In June 2011 he found a new venue, and by mid-August 2011 the new restaurant opened. It was a smaller venue, but he tried to retain the Vaastu characteristic through decoration and quality service & food. The restaurant ran from August ‘11 - July ’13 and again won Guangzhou’s Best Indian Restaurant award in 2012.

Towards the end of 2012 he was having difficulties with his speech, as he had been having throughout the years being in the service business, and he decided to finally Google to find an answer. In January ’13 he attended an intensive speech therapy program in New York. In this program he did desensitization activities, that helped make him more comfortable with his stammering, like voluntary stammering and self-advertising. Then he learned tools like light-contact prolongation, cancellations, pull-outs, and planning what tool to use in your sentence to help make him feel more in control of his stammering. This program helped me feel like he was in control of his speech, which helped him realize that he was in control of his life.

He decided that he wanted to pursue passions beyond business, particularly in food security. He had seen the grotesque amount of food being wasted everyday in the restaurant and learned that more people were dying each day of hunger than any other disease. He decided to dedicate his life to working on food security issues. He sold the restaurant in July ’13, and moved to Mumbai.

His original plan was to attend graduate school and do a Master’s program in New York in Food Policy. However, after a conversation with a dean at his dream school, he realized he should get some experience first. During this time he began to work with the Postharvest Education Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing food loss. Through the organization he got a chance to attend a United Nations Food & Agricultural Organization conference in Rome, Italy in December 2013. This opened his eyes to type of work being done in the field. Most importantly, he learned it wasn’t a food loss or food waste issue, but more an economic issue. In big cities, there is enough distribution of food, however, people cannot afford to purchase food. Therefore, he learned the issue is rather economic policy, job creation, socioeconomic balance issues.

While in Mumbai he joined TISA. He attended a self-help group in Mumbai and was grateful to meet other people in Mumbai who stammered. He then attended his first TISA National Conference in October 2013 and was ecstatic to have met so many people who stammered from all over the country. He felt part of a long-lost family and was eating parathas in Delhi’s paratha-vali-gali like a Delhite in no time.

After returning from the NC, he got more involved with the SHG and decided to search for a permanent venue where they could meet. Through a fellow TISA member Gaurav Dubey, currently Mumbai SHG president, who found the YMCA Ghatkopar, he approached them and sealed a deal to use the YMCA venue for a year at no cost. Then he worked on structuring the SHG agenda to merge stammering self-help with the Toastmaster's organized format. This resulted in a weekly meeting with extempore speeches, prepared speeches and a fun learning session. The design of the format was finalized after consultation with Harish Usgaonker, leader of the Goa SHG and Dr. Sachin.

Through his connections at Bombay Connect, information on stammering and TISA was published in Mumbai Mid-Day (http://www.mid-day.com/articles/get-vocal-about-stammering/15102075 ), a local newspaper read by over 40% of the city’s population. This was a huge win for stammering awareness in Mumbai and India. Further, many people who stammer saw the article and contacted Dhruv to attend the SHG meetings. This helped surge the growth of the SHG.

Dhruv decided he would dedicate his life to helping people who stammer. He researched online and found several organizations that work exclusively to help children, teenagers and adults who stammer. He decided to work with them to understand what programs they offer and how he can bring such programs back to India. In June 2014 he traveled to the US to learn about these programs, primarily the Stuttering Association for the Young, the American Institute for Stuttering and the National Stuttering Association. He is excited to be back in India and apply his learnings from the west with the Indian philosophy that everything we need to know is already inside us, we just need the right perspective and a caring community to discover it.

HOW TO GET RID OF FEAR

My common advise to some of the following questions asked by pws :

Pws were asking doubts like how can I give presentation, give seminar, to stop tension, to reduce fast breathing, to control anxiety etc... The only solution that I can give to all was to SPEAK WELL.

TODAY I HAVE SPOKEN AT TWO RETIREMENT FUNCTIONS

I got voluntary retirement from Metro Water department in Oct 13 (originally due on May 15.)

Whenever on my close colleague retirement day, I uses to go and convey my wishes to him . Today, three of my close colleagues got retirement.

TODAY WHATSAPP GROUPS COMPLETING 6 MONTHS

I wish to inform all the members with pleasure that 1st whatsapp group was launched on 1st of January 2014, is completing 6 months as on today.

I take this opportunity to thank all the members who have listened my advice and practicing accordingly.

In this connection, I wish to inform the following :

1. There are 6 main groups namely DD, MI, KKR, RCB&HSR, CSK & GROUP 5 .

2. One AV group and also one FUN group.

3. The total members strength as on today is 220.

4. Most of the members were now convinced that there was no shortcut & they have to do some kind of speech practice for at least one year to overcome their stammering.

5. About 40% members were practicing speech therapy. Most of them were giving positive feedback. I request those members to do silent speech therapy, extensive use of head movements, slow down their physical activities & slow writing also which ever is possible (whenever they are free) through out the day. Because, one hour practice alone is not sufficient. Overcoming stammering is changing their old personality into a entirely new one. To achieve this, they have to take sustained efforts throughout the day .

I request them to practice sincerely for another 6 months, get rid of their stammering and start achieving what they could not able to achieve now due to stammering. Be a role models to others.
All the best to everyone.

Pune SHG Journey.....

Pune SHG started during 2008 when JP was in Pune. We had many active members like Manohar since then. Since last few years Sanjeet and Amol have been driving the Pune SHG with dedication. We have seen some growth at Pune SHG since last one year that we are meeting regularly. We are seeing 10-15 members every Sunday and we have also noticed there is good improvement in their speech. Pune SHG has been very active currently where we are organizing Communication Workshop every quarter, which has been attended by many from other cities besides Pune. We have heard life changing feedback from them, which encourages us to work for the community with more fervor. Because of enthusiasm shown by Pune team TISA has given opportunity to host National Conference in Pune 2014. We would like to see your support and join and get benefited from this selfless service which Pune team is striving to achieve. We look forward to see you in person in Pune.

Tisa Hyderabad chapter news 15 June

We were 6 members for meetup.
1.Rajsekhar 2.Ramu 3.Ramesh 4.Lalaiah 5.Purna 6.Rajesh.
Today's meetup is centered around commitment to practice.
Many members think they should come to meetings and do practice but most of them fail because of lack of commitment.

The reasons for only a few pws could successfully able to overcome their stammering

I posted this article in the whatsapp group. For the benefit of others, I am posting it here also.

(A) PWS WHO DO NOT KNOW TECHNIQUES

1. A little awareness or no awareness at all either to the pws or to their parents about stammering. Most of the parents were of the opinion that  stammering would outgrown in due course of time and he could able to speak well.

2. The parents were seeing only tip of an iceberg. They were unable to understand their children's inner feelings and treating stammering as not an issue at all .

3. Due to changing lifestyle, parents were giving more pressure to their children to score good marks in school, get a seat in one of the best colleges and get a good job.

It was great to see all of us conquering that part at least-Pat on the back :) .

ADVISE FOR YOUNG PWS.....HOW TO CHOOSE A SPEECH THRAPY

Dear all,

This is the very lengthy message that I had ever written for both TISA blog & whatsapp groups.

At the outset, I wish to inform that this message is not for seniors & also those members who have chosen their path for their stammering and traveling comfortably.

This posting is especially for young pws & new comers to whatsapp group members. Because they were in a dilemma which they have to choose and travel comfortably with stammering. One pws asking, even after he accepted his stammering, fluency eluded him and could not get better placement. Another pws telling, after he accepted his stammering, he lost interest in any kind of speech practice but still stammering.

The Final Technique..

The other day, Ankit came. He has done class 12 and hopes to join a badminton academy. Good choice. I took him to OPD. The OPD was looking something like this in the morning rush hour...
First I gave a demo and then asked him to emulate it. After some cajoling, Ankit came to the front and gave his intro.
Later we sat in the canteen with a Mountain Dew between us. I asked him "before and after" kind of question. His thoughts before and after the big bang..
He said, he was scared before- but now, having done it, he was feeling like Akshay Kumar- Khatron ka khiladi! I may or may not teach him any "techniques". He is young. He might do fine with just this one technique- courage.
My evolution as a counsellor, has left me with some insights. One of these is - we ask for technique and therapist gives us a technique- as a professional service, which can be charged for. We conclude that fluency is the real issue so therapist too agrees and asks us to focus on being fluent. But fluency or lack of it is the surface phenomena, governed by deep undercurrents of how we are feeling at a given moment, in a given situation: how we are feeling about ourselves, the other person and about the task at hand - the task of sharing some information in many instances. In a nutshell, our emotional state.
Many years ago, while driving, a cow suddenly came in my path. I jammed on the breaks. But car kept on moving steadily towards the cow. Fortunately, it was in a low gear and the cow had time to get off the road- as suddenly as it came on. Accident averted, I pulled over, rested my head on the steering, breathed deeply - and tried to understand, what had happened just then. I discovered with a shock - My foot was never on break pedal..!
This is what happens to many of us. We learn techniques with our left brain- and when we panic, right brain (emotions) takes over and we go down the old way.
Moral of the story: whatever technique you use or practice - ask yourself, is it challenging enough? is it making me more courageous? Is it changing my beliefs and attitude about world and dealing with it? Even if you practiced no technique, but changed your attitude, became more risk-taking, your problems will be over. Now, how to become courageous?
Simple- by doing small acts of courage on a daily basis..
..
..
BTW, the audience clapped for Ankit..

What the heck!

I wrote a story sometime back and ever since, worried much about sharing it with the world. "What the heck!" - that is how people would react, I was sure! Then, one day I said to myself, bad reaction is better than no reaction at all- so let me share it. I will be sharing further chapters, if the audience insists on it! Before we begin, let me state:  This is essentially a work of fiction- a story meant for young adults. No offence meant to any group or community or anyone living or dead. Just pure fiction!

Many Many Thanks to you, Mani Sir!!

We have just realized that Mr Manimaran is facing time constraints and at his request, we are relieving him of his coordination responsibilities. He will continue to be a much loved senior & colleague, available to all of us. Please join us in extending a deep sincere gratitude to Mr Manimaran for his silent and consistent work to help others since 2001, begun under- very aptly- Gandhi Ji's statue on Marina beach in Chennai.
You may contact him, especially if you are from Tamilnadu and around, for help, guidance and counselling. The best medium will be: Whatsapp - a very innovative group, evolved by him over last one year. These six flourishing groups with 200+ members from all over India (women too), have become a vibrant community, where you can search and pick up a fellow pws from your own city in a few minutes- contact him, go out and practice with him- and share an ice-cream too!
Please join us in praying for him, his family and friends - for all his creativity and social initiatives...
..
..

On another note, we will be restructuring TISA and you are welcome to let us know if you have time to volunteer. Write to sachin, answering just two questions briefly: what have you done in the past and what you want to do in the future- with and for TISA. Sachin has taken up the coordination role in the interim.
Also, gear up and start planning for some nice long walks around Lonavala hills (3-5 October, 2014)..Bring good trekking shoes if you wish to compete against sachin !!
(Thanks to Mumbai and Pune SHG!!)

Practicing in Delhi Metro

I've recently shifted to Noida and these days, I'm staying with my friend at Tilak Nagar in delhi and travel daily to Noida office by Delhi Metro.

This mode of rapid transit is an excellent example of highly efficient and profitable and user friendly facility in India is possible if intentions are honest and positive. During peak hours (8 am to 10 am & 5.30 pm to 8 pm), extreme heavy load of passengers can be seen outside metro stations and at ticket counters and stairs. But, you will not see more than a handful of passengers at platforms, thanks to very frequent metro service and to add on, comfortable air conditioned coaches which helps passengers to travel even in highly crowded coaches.

Anyways, lets come to the main subject matter.I am practicing my speech in metro, twice a day, back and forth.Wherever I stand in train coach, I will give a short 2 minute speech about TISA and its offering of help to stammerers.People in Delhi, the capital of world's biggest democracy are pretty mature and almost every time, they behave sensibly to my speech and a few times, people do inquire also.

Now, doing it every day, I am becoming comfortable to it gradually.

My observations about this exercise are :-

1. I do try to speak fluently and it is the real test of my acceptance.I am looking forward to insert few bouncing and prolongations in my speech in coming days.

2. People behave sensibly and in a supportive manner.Hence, stammering is not that bad actually.

3. If some times, I receive negative responses.I used to feel bad and some times, even I tend to go into pre-fighting mode which shows that I have to grasp acceptance to deep that no such negative response can disturb my peace of mind and inner stability.

The facilitator introduced himself and the theme of the meeting and then asked each of the role players to introduce themselves and their roles.

After this started was the Learning session which was led by Srinivas Basutkar. The theme of the session was “Introduction to EFT(Emotional Freedom Technique)”. We learnt about the various points on our body which when tapped relaxes our speech mechanism. It was new for most of us and a great learning one :-)

After this was the Extempore session which was led by Kevin D'Souza. The theme was “Emotional EXperiences”. The speakers shared their emotions and their story on some nice topics(which will be shared on the Mumbai SHG Youtube channel).

Finally, the role players evaluated the speeches of all the speakers. The role booking for the next week was done by Gaurav Dubey and Kevin D'Souza. After this we moved towards the snacks center where we had some tasty vada pav and pani puri, thanks to Vikas Tantia :-) This concluded our SHG meet.

Meeting an old mate--rewinding of old memories

Hi folks, I've recently resumed a new job at Noida. Its been a completely new job profile and new working culture ad completely new people to live with.An exciting equation it is and a little uncomfortable as well. Here at this job, i got to meet my engineering class mate whom I met after almost 8 years. It was really a pleasant surprise. She was a good friend of mine and we were in good relation.
Now, she is married and having a kid.

Having finished all formal greets and discussions, when I started getting professional, it was a flashback of my final year engineering studies, when I almost abandoned any word exchange with all my female class mates owing to speech hesitations.

So, here as well, immediately, my mind got filled up with all those hesitations and fears. But, being professional colleagues, you need to exchange words profoundly specially when you are a newbie and you have a lot of initial genuine doubts to deal with. So, I was really hesitant initially asking her questions, but, I was clearly seeing her answering my questions in a decent manner in most simplest manner and never giving any impression towards my speech struggles as all.Slowly my past memories and anticipations of bad experiences are diluting. Now, my next target is to get comfortable with rest of the staff as well, where I am hesitant, because I have to work with them and it is almost impossible to avoid talking to them and talking to them means stammering because it is almost impossible for me to talk to someone everyday and not letting him/her know about my stammer. So, earlier I get open up, better it will be to make sure I enjoys my job well.

WHY SPEECH THERAPY NECESSARY - VIDEOS

In the first video, the possible causes of stammering were explained.

In the second video, how to overcome stammering with speech therapy was discussed.

In the third video, apart from speech what are all the other activities which also helps to overcome stammering.

In the fourth and final video, improvement on speech after five months of speech therapy was shown.

REASONS FOR DOING SPEECH THERAPY TO OVERCOME STAMMERING

I received many such a following questions from the members and seek my opinion.

1. I am talking well with my parents and friends, but stammering with strangers. How to talk well with strangers?

2. I am having lack of confidence in facing interviews, thus stammering and get rejected. How to face interviews?

3. It's very difficult to give seminar and presentation. What is the way out?

MY THOUGHTS ON STAMMERING & HOW TO OVERCOME IT:

The following explanation about stammering is my personal opinion based on my experience and the results from the speech therapy which I have learned. Though, I could not give any scientific explanation but I will give some acceptable &  logical reasoning.

DO NOT STRUGGLE WITH STAMMERING

Flowers do not struggle to Bloom.
Water does not struggle to Flow.
Sun does not struggle to Shine.
Grass does not struggle to Grow.

STRUGGLE is UN-NATURAL.

So why struggle with Stammering?

Be Like Nature.
GO WITH THE FLOW.
