self recording: power of replaying ourselves

by kundan

Knowing our speaking pattern should be the first step before modifications of the behaviour is sought. Do we really know our stammering?
Self recording yourself in varieties speaking situation in videos or audios is a good way to know what are you doing the wrong way.

Though it is very powerful and effective technique to know about our personality helping us improve the whole  way of our communication. Unfortunately we stammerers are very scared of listening our own recorded conversations.

Recording of meetings, cricket matches, debates is often encouraged in practice,so it should be in case of we stammerers as well, because it helps us to analyze about our discussions, how the game could have improved, how the communication could have better..In short its about learning from the past experiences for improving next meetings, practices, debate etc.

In words of Ralph Waldo Emerson "
do the things you fear and the fear will vanish.
Stammerers need to contemplate on recording the conversation made during phone calls or buying items at grocery shops, talking to teachers and peers.

As Trotter puts it beautifully"
listening to yourself stutter on a tape recorder is another good way of helping reduce your fear of stuttering.

Through this exercise we can collect pretty much information about 1.the nature of blocks,if yes in which situations,
2.which were the words that tend to get repeated every time i speak,
3.how was i speaking at the beginning and at the end.

Dr.Satyendra Srivastava,Founder and chief mentor of  TISA says" self recording and replaying the same is very powerful and effective technique of self help, absolutely free of cost.He further adds "video recording is preferred to audio recording as it has both visual and audio, playback of phone conversation is very helpful indeed.

Here is some of the beautiful lines worth reading again and again by J.D.Williams
"there is nothing like being like able to hear your own speech in order to judge what you do,don't like about it,and to decide what changes to make as you practice.

Well said Mr.Kundan. It is only WE who can judge our performances. We need to continuously work on our speech.

Since a week, what i am doing is i call some skill development institutions, advertising company like phoenix advt and record the conversation.Sometimes i record my speech when asking for vegetable prices.
At the end of the day,or during lunch hours,I playback those recorded conversations.
Hearing my own speech was a bit awkward in the beginning,(now also but not that much), helped me to get insight of how i speak and other things like when do block occurs, and most significant thing that happens is you carry those awareness while talking the next time...
That i find, the most beautiful thing about self recording.
Hope it clarifies my take on self recording.
