Has any one tried or used Slow Rate of Speech

As adviced by a speech therapist i am trying to maintain a slow and constant rate of speech . But i am not able to do it properly even after trying it for 2 months and my speech therapist and even i am upset.
He told speech is voluntary so why you are not able to maintain it . If you are having emotions problem - fear , anxiety so you yourself are showing these emotions and they are not coming on their own. See others are doing so well and now how fluent they are after 2 months and you are still the same Gorav who came on the very first day no improvemenr at all and why i have to tell you same thing again and again to slow down .

*** So please has anyone of you used or tried this technq then tell me how you did this . Plz comment ***

I told speech therapist should i practice reading slow for 1 hour daily he said no you are grown up and intelligent enough that just half an hour of practise is enough for a lifetime .

It requires a lot of practise to slow down. I took more than one year to slow down my rate of speech. Slow reading exercise certainly works. But it needs to be done continuously. Breathinging exerciss are also helpful. Please keep doing with positive mind, you will be succesful.

I too have dealt with this problem. At home, my talking speed was often discussed. My friends also commented on my talking speed. It was so disturbing, but I just couldn't control the speed. I tried many things... Vocal prolongation exercises in the morning, Meditation, talking more and more to people by reducing the speed etc. I really don't know what really worked, but after a few years, I did reduce my speed.

I feel, when you are at peace with yourself and your stammer, everything starts working... It's just that the huge iceberg should melt, and the rest will follow...

It's a long process with long term output.. All the best Gorav.. You are already walking this brave path by writing and sharing your thoughts...

As Dr.Sachin rightly pointed out pausing is more important than slowing down your speech. It is the natural tendency to react at the same speed of speech with that of the other person. If you suppress the emotions only, you can speak slowly which will take long time. So first practice with pausing which is also very difficult. After some months of practice, you can go for slow speaking. All the best.

@Gorav - All the below things have worked for me.

A)Break every problem into smaller parts so that every minute things can be addressed at ease.
It is little hard to slow down after particular number of words are produced or talk only some number of words in an unit of time. As this approach's rule is little complex(as we always tempt to go fast) so we might not implement it easily.
On other hand once you define a rule in slow speaking it shall be easy to implement so keep an easy approach like talking syllable by syllable it will automatically slow down your speech.
If you divide your words into syllable by syllable then you are almost cutting it into smaller parts and each minute part can be addressed and done well.Unlike other approaches syllable style is easy to implement as rules are fixed and it is known to your brain everytime where to pause exactly in your words.

B) Try to follow a shortest rhythm, if you ever tried rhythm style speaking it will be very much easy for you. With this shortest rhythm you will benefit in 2 ways, one is rhythm style will make your speech easy to follow and other is a short rhythm makes you give pauses automatically without much effort or say without more brain usage making it concentrate on other aspects of speech like content to deliver.

C) Pausing method which Sachin ji mentioned is ultimate one of all.

D) Meditation is for concentration so try to concentrate that you shall speak slow while you are meditating. Try to feel a situation that you are talking slowly while you are meditating. This is something like you are making your mind to forsee /plan/tweak to talk slowly :)

Above all practice is important! it shall be implemented till it becomes a characteristics of yours ! and it becomes so only when you extend your practice to all situations in life.
It becomes your habit of yours.
From then on you never need to worry/concentrate on all these things as it will become your style of talking slowly by that time :)

Regards.

Gorav, I tried a lot of reading in my comforatable speed and mostly just before I slept - This helped me a bit!

Reading is static and not as complex or challenging as talking dynamically.

To make my reading a little challenging, I used to memorize few sentences and then reproduce it in front of mirror - this kind of practice put me in situation which I face outside. In short, I tried to reproduce the scenario which I face outside in the comfort of room and try to deal with this at least when I'm alone and when there is not too much to lose. This was also very helpful to me.
