SHAUN SANTAMARIA : TISA IS WITH YOU

Today morning I was shocked to read the news in the Times of India that Shaun Santamaria, a seven year old boy has been asked to leave his Pune school as he stammered, stating stammering a physical disability. It has been rightly stated that the school authorities need counseling to better understand the speech disorder. The people who stammer have certainly higher IQ’s. How can they be deprived of their right to education? It’s shameful that Shaun has to move Mumbai High Court for protection of his rights. The school authorities need to be shown the movie : King’s Speech. They should also know that King George VI, Aristotle, Winston Churchil, Marilyn Munroe, EMS Namboodripad, Hrithik Roshan, Rownan Atkinson, Kangna Ranaut, Ed Ball, Nani Palkhiwala, etc. all had speech disorders but were never asked to leave the school. Why we remember these names is not a secret.

I appeal TISA members to join for the protection of the rights of Shaun Santamaria.

TISA also thanks Sumitra Deb Roy, TNN for appropriately covering the news item.

Stammering is not a disability and one can overcome it. So, the denial of education to such children is denial of human rights. We all need to fight against the 'social disease' of categorising individuals as normal and disable. No individuals are disable and they may be more able than those whom we call normal. Stammerers are not diseased but those who call them disable are!!!
