Experience of Bhavana as this was her first NC...... "Man ki baatein"

Myself Bhavana Patil from Mumbai SHG.
It was my first NC.I was nervous and tense about NC as I was knowing very few people from Mumbai only.
But I after reaching Goa I felt a infinite comfort zone when Goa SHG people and other gave us warm welcome ๐Ÿ˜Š.
Everyone was introducing themselves with "stammering and blocks".. Those blocks were making me more comfortable each time as there will be no1 to laugh at me๐Ÿ˜€
In NC,I met many experienced and well settled people. I was always having thinking that I can't do anything in my life due to stammering but after meeting those people my mind set have got changed in a positive way and I decided to work more hard towards my goal.๐Ÿ™‹
The calm environment in Goa gave me time to think about me. Beaches were giving me inspiration you can do it ,don't quit.๐Ÿ˜ค
Now,I had accepted myself as I am,I am no more hiding my stammering also working for improvement. There was a huge difference between Bhavana who has arrived to Goa๐Ÿค and Bhavana who has departure  from Goa๐Ÿ—ฃ.
Last one, I proudly tell my friend now I am having huge network of friends all over the India.. ๐Ÿ™†...

Thank you all for such a great experience ,I wish I will have more in future.. ๐Ÿ˜€ Happy to have you all๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—.....

First of all I would like to thank to all the participants of TISA 6th National Conference and the organisers of the conference who made us feel that we all are family members and are supporting each other in the path of life and shall be standing along with each other in the ups and downs…

After attending the conference we ( Vivek, Sh Parmod Sir, Dr Akash Sir) got so much positive energy and vibrations which inspired us that it should be spread all around. After the conference got finished we reached to Colva Beach and started making aware to people about stammering and what we learnt in this NC.

We explained them about :-

» What is The Indian Stammering Association ?
» What is Stammering ?
» How it is caused ?
» How to help the person who stammers ?
» Views about stammering from their side.

We talked to some foreigners also about stammering and their views made us so much inspired and felt us so much unique which cannot be expressed in words. Their approach and understanding was very much positive.

At last we treated ourselves for the happiness of getting the very supportive feedback from the people.

I would like to give special Thanks to Sh. Parmod Kumar Sir and Dr.Akash Acharya Sir who also participated in this and made their full contribution.

Regards.

Thoughts on NH17....

A big Cheers to All,

If you were in this NC, you would know how amazing these three days were! Not only because of meeting so many stammers in one place but also the scenic beauty. On the beach, when you look to the ocean and see its limits and still, the balance and the harmony in everything, you wonder how amazing creator must be. I am still in the "high" of greenery, breeze and sound of waves. A lot of new members have joined into our little world since me. Listening to tales about their struggles reminded me of what changes has come in me in these two years. This NC also brought back the beautiful memories of bunking classes when we left the conference hall and went for a walk on the beach(although I advise no one to do it).

Know thy Coordinator

Great presenter; Mimicry too!
Harish holds a masters degree in IT, and works as a Module Lead in a leading IT firm in Goa. He has many hobbies: writing, graphic designing, mimicry, singing and a lot more, waiting to be discovered, I guess..

Someday, I am sure, he will start a business, publish a novel, raise a great family… in a nutshell, achieve everything worthwhile under the Goan sun. But life has a price. You have to work and earn every experience, every bit of insight. Harish too has led a life, which cannot be called “easy” by any stretch of imagination.

I got to know Harish in Oct 2009 – over phone calls and through many online chats. Then, we met in Bhubaneshwar during our first NC- 2012, where he charmed everyone with his presentation... and his fine nature. To me, he came across as a very sensitive young man. (May be a little bit too sensitive in an uncaring world? I wonder- but hope not..)
So, how did it all begin?

In 2009, He had seen an interview of JP and Dr Tarun, put up by me on youtube. Initially he was skeptical about acceptance, the core message of TISA. Then, he saw Ritik Roshan’s “Tere Mere Beech” interview. That began to change his ideas. In fact, he wrote a paper about it, for the International Conference on stammering awareness 2011, organized by Judith Kuster (link at the bottom).

He understood the role of self-help groups. He decided to start one. This can be challenging. But he persisted. Soon, a group was gravitating towards him: Santosh, Rahul, Prakash, Dnyanesh.. and many more.

Calm and cool - but alert!
We were chatting online regularly and one day he announced excitedly – It was 2nd Nov 2009: “First Goa SHG meet is finalized today. It's scheduled for 7th November 2009…

Then came second meeting- no one turned up - and Harish was disappointed! Harish was discovering the mysterious nature of stammering and stammerers. People will ask for help – but refuse to take that first step: stepping out of the self-imposed house arrest. It was so confusing. But the journey continued.

The confidence generated by setting up the first SHG in Goa, touched other aspects of his life as well: He began talking about it at home and at work. He challenged himself further by giving stage performances and joining a public speaking club – Toastmasters. Then came the high point in 2012: he interviewed the Vice President (Sales and Marketing) of his own organization on his perspective on Stammering for a Samvad write-up: “Stammer: What does the corporate think?”.

In the meantime, he had begun writing about stammering and other things: stories, poems. Earlier, during post-graduation, he had started to write a diary. Urge to communicate is so strong in us that it WILL manifest one way or the other. He already had a private blog and went around by a screen name, which told me more about himself than his REAL name ever did: Silent Scream. I was quite intrigued. Here is a poem he wrote in the winter of 2010, about a bird in a cage and its resolve to break free someday, as he himself eventually did:

Tough may be these bars,
I can’t sever them apart,
But listen all you fellows,
I don’t loose heart.
Look at me not,
With those usual sorry eyes,
I am one like you,
So very beautiful, so very nice.
Being a bird, I always dream high,
“A day will come, when I will fly, I will fly”
(Winter 2010)

Our non-stop online chats were not one sided: He too was teaching me something through chance comments and by sharing all kinds of issues and perspectives. He introduced me to a great movie: Front of the class, which I later shared in many workshops and which was much appreciated by others.

Then, he wrote on the blog about Swapnil in Jan 2010- the budding cricketer and his stammering. Some of his SHG members reacted badly. We discussed the issue and realized that stammering needs acceptance in public sphere a lot more than treatment in private clinics!

Another milestone was when Harish organized a three-day communication workshop in Goa in April 2011, with help from JP, his colleague and friend in TISA. All these were major challenges for him - not just in terms of organizing them but also accepting the fact that, yes- stammering IS an important issue for him – important enough to take such huge steps in public life.  He was able to get valuable help from Dr Farida, TM, Goa, fortunately. And the workshop went very well.

He has served TISA immensely by taking up the production of quarterly Samwad (pdf) magazine – editing, producing content, lay-outing etc. etc. He has set up very high standards. I sincerely wonder if and when will we find a team to match those standards!

In connection with Samwad, he was getting in touch with Pakistan, Nepal, Australia, BSA etc. to promote it and to get write ups from NRI abroad. Harish was working with Amit Kushwaha for Hindi content; He was dealing with Hindi spellings and its funny trick of going all haywire with slightest change of the script! He has played a very hectic and productive innings with Amit, as the editorial team.

His help to JP and myself, has been immense; responding to emails, phone calls, request for help from pws all over, setting up events, planning NCs, raising funds, dealing with critics and what not; All this- while being one hundred percent faithful to the central spirit of TISA: acceptance and self-help. Team spirit and sensitivity to others’ feelings and needs – will come up easily as the two of his core qualities as a volunteer, consistently since 2009.

Change begins with self..
He shared with me once- in his own words: “As a child and teenager, I explored all sorts of ‘therapy’ to achieve that magic ‘fluency’! I desperately tried Speech Therapy, Hypnotherapy and all sorts of so called ‘Stammering Cure’ centers. Every time, there was a relapse. And every relapse brought big disappointment, a sense of failure. As I neared graduation, the low esteem was coupled with fear. Will I ever be able to succeed in this competitive world when I fumble in my speech?

I came in contact with TISA when I was at the dawn of my career. When I realized the true meaning of Acceptance (towards stammering), TISA was beginning to look like my ‘home’. Working with TISA taught me the most important thing in life- breaking out of comfort zone. Secondly, I learnt that stammering is a part of me and will remain to be. But it’s not me. Life is much more. I do not have to wait for fluency to achieve my goals. That was the time I began to think about my goals, my ambitions, career, dreams… Now it all seemed possible!

Old Avtaar: Silent scream!
The most important thing that TISA taught me is acceptance. And it has helped me (still helps me) not just in stammering, but in all aspects of life. I realized that acceptance is essential to live a contented life. I had lot of ups and downs in personal life ahead… and the acceptance attitude helped a great deal. I will always be highly indebted to TISA for changing the way I was looking at life. TISA still continues to teach me, and I wish to learn as much I can with TISA and TISA friends.”

TISA cannot claim any credit – but we are sure that there is a POWER that takes note of and rewards sincere and self-less service to others- and no wonder, Harish found a worthy partner in 2015 and got married. Now, we are sure, that TISA has two friends, not just one. We deeply value that.

As you get to know him during this NC-2016, you may browse these links to know more about him:

ISAD Paper:

We wish TISA all the BEST under Harish’s stewardship, as the national coordinator - and offer him our best support. Let me conclude by paraphrasing Jose Ortega:

"Common men, driven by a dream, can do uncommon things.."

Patna Bihar SHG meeting Report 11th Sept 2016

Hello Everyone,

Greeting!
Today meeting was held in Eco park right at 4.30pm. The weather was rainy and it feels great to kick start the meeting. There were three members- Suraj, Sanjay and Me. Sanjay is a new member who came with her wife. We were expecting 5-6 members but unfortunately due to heavy rain, no one can able to attend it. The meeting started with an introduction round.

Mind War – The Battle of Perspectives

Is it wrong to love the way I stutter?
Isn’t it unethical to run away from the very nature of my stuttering?
Why Am I trying to emulate fluent speech?
Is stuttering being associated with unacceptance in the facade of fluency?
Why Am I using acceptance as a tool to get to a state of fluent speech?
Is acceptance a tool or a state of being?
I am confused, what is stuttering?
Is stuttering the very state of my being?
Should I give up natural state of my being just to fit into some socially acceptable norm of fluency?
Am I really confused?

I want to find out the answers not to solve the mystery behind what is stuttering or what it is not. I want to find out answers not to create a path that leads to goodness of fluency.
Also I want to find out answers not to solve the mystery behind what is fluency or what it is not. I want to find out answers not to create a path that leads to the goodness of stuttering.

But I want to find the answers such that it deepens the mystery instead of solving it. Answers that will create more mystery such that we start to question the very nature of our confusion going in our heads.

There is lot of information available to us just a click away.  May be it will create an added knowledge base to our intellect. Is it really helping us in any way deep down? Probably we only know the answer well. May be the information initially successfully creates a romantic connect, we feel good, but sooner or later it fades away. And it leaves us wanting more information to feel good. We experiment with the new information on stuttering, practice it, get the result, period. May be one day I become fluent. May be I never become fluent. Who knows?
Is it over yet? Why isn’t it over yet? May be I should see a different speech therapist? I have asked these endless questions to myself over long periods of time.

I want to expose you to a different realm of the whole drama.
I guess the sheer number of fluent speakers on the other side of the coin are making us feel the illusion that stuttering is some undesirable quality. And the very illusion feels apparently more real when some of the so called fluent speakers support the undesirable quality to be undesirable. They are the culprits who wants us to speak like them. And we become the puppets who support their version of what is normal and abnormal views. Either ways both the perspectives are born out of illusions.

For example:
Why can’t we force them to be like us? For a moment it seems an absurd idea. But think over it for a while.
What if we are less in number? We can outweigh them not by number but by our diverse nature. We have more diversity than them. We have people who stutter in different ways. A stutterer stutters in multiple different ways If we find out different ways of stuttering, probably we could end up with a number which is far more than the population of our planet.

Now I guess research should be done in this area. Now the fluent researchers will be defeated and disappointed because there is only one way of speaking fluently. So clearly we are the winners. We are richer in quality than them. Poor fluent speakers, feeling bad for you. Comrades, congratulations for the victory. Long live stuttering. Cherish the diversity. Are you feeling better?

I gave the above example just to create a shift in the way we all look at stuttering. I am not trying to prove anyone right or wrong. I mean is this war in mind really needed. I guess both the sides are equally false and illusory. Just shifting the sides of the coins might make us feel better for a moment, but the confusion of fluency and stuttering is a never ending battle created by all of us. Let’s end the war and create a unified diversity without labels.

With the unification, the battle between the perspectives will end. It will surely create peace and tranquillity all over the planet, with the very dissolution of conflicts. There will grow acceptance for differences, now it doesn’t matter what we label the difference. The very difference is the very being of the individual, which is supposed to be the natural and organic entity they are born with.

Comrades, let’s put the poisonous coin of conflict in the furnace of love and unification. Let’s stand up together for oneness. We have the weapon of acceptance with us.
Is it really necessary to solve the mystery? Is my confusion just an illusion?

How I ROCKED The Indian Navy Group Discussion !!

Recently I participated in a group discussion which was among twelve students of different colleges. The GD was a part of the campus recruitment program by Indian Navy. The topic of our discussion was women empowerment. But first of all, we have to give our introduction, I was very nervous at first because the others were doing very well. My turn was the last so my heart was pumping at its verge.  I controlled my emotions and gave my introduction and it was compulsory that we have to speak for about 3 minutes minimum about yourself.

Hello Everyone,

This Sunday we had a meeting in children’s park at 4.30pm. We were three members- Suraj, Rishikesh and Me. The meeting started with the formal talks with me and Rishikesh. Rishikesh has a severe stuttering so he were facing lots of problems with this speech. Rishikesh and me discussing lots of matters like how to practice with the right attitude. Rishikesh as a problem of lack of self-discipline like we all stammers have so I told him to start practicing from now.

Later on Suraj has joined us and we all discussed many things of stammering and its solution. He has also given risks a precious advice that just talk no matter what people say to him. He told to start talking as much as possible starting at home.

On Rishikesh request,  I called Dr Sachin and he advices to create stammering campaign over your city which we are actually not doing. We are lack of regular members, although we have more than 10 members in our city, but only  3-4 are regular. On Sachin sir advice we are keen to create this awareness campaign to every college and schools. Also to include some activities to our meeting.

Toastmaster V-V-V-Vishal gave his first ever humurous speech on the topic "Funniest Moment of a PWS" and won the contest

Before Contest :
I already had backed out from the contest as I was having lot of work load at office, but I decided at-least I will go to watch others.

During Contest :
Contest has begun, During Running contest, in whispering voice I told to the Contest chair that I have topic, I can try to participate but I told that I am blank with content and what she did, she wrote my name in the speaker list. Now my heart-beat became so fast....coz I knew I don't have anything to tell except 1-2 points.

But finally after 2 contestant, my turn came and till then I had written 4 hilarious points regarding my title "Funnies moments of a PWS". Then I went there and now you can watch me what I spoke.

Behind this Chance :
I am so thankful to my GOD and office colleagues that they have trust on me always that I can do anything but friends, since 1 months, My stammering fall is going on and I wanted to do something then Finally,  God gave me this chance. You know first time ever in my life till TISA journey since 2012, I stammered freely & openly and I felt proud to accept myself and to say yes I am a person who stammer but I can do what I want to do.
