AHJ Hindi translation from Users

Dr Chandraprakash from Jaipur SHG has translated the last chapter of AHJ! Congrats! I am sharing it here. Ignore the short comings. Just enjoy reading it. We encourage these attempts by users to promote engagement with AHJ and self help activities.

Any Hindi lovers ?

If you have a little time, please read this google doc and leave your comment (like "unclear", "Spelling", "check the sentence" etc.). This will help TISA to finalise the translation of Seven Stories for children who can not read it in English. Many readers in the past have commented - why everything in English on this blog? So this is your chance to contribute. Dead line is June 29th, 2 pm. TISA thanks you sincerely in advance. If you need offline copy or more time, let us know in the comments.

(Myths about Stuttering)

Stammerers as sales Executive?

Sounds like a wild proposition. But we, the pws, often challenge the limits. Sometime we succeed, sometime we are richer by the experience. But the bottom line is- we will never know, what we are capable of, who we truly are - unless we do not go out and try. THIS knowledge, no therapist, no course can give to us as a gift. We have to earn it ourselves. Here is a wonderful story of human spirit overcoming huge difficulties. You will surely, see yourself in this true account from Africa:

Bangalore SHG Meeting Report: 15 June 2015

I was nice cool Sunday morning, I reached 10 mins late and found that our place(Regular hut) was occupied.  so we had to conduct meeting in another nearby hut. I was good change this new hut was bigger and good change for all of us.

First we all did loud paragraph reading, everyone read one page loudly.
then we thought of sharing out stammering experiences, practices and what is working and what is not working for us.Most of us were doing slow reading and slow speaking practice. For me doing rehearsal before some important event is also helping. Why we stammer less during prepared speech because we had done enough practice before delivering it.
Everyone shared shared their experiences and few incidents which were bothering them.
Last week Akash shared one issue with his colleague and we suggested him to
talk to him 1:1, Akash did same and issue is resolved, he was very happy.
few member are in process of getting married and there was big question that, weather we PWS should
tell upfront that We have some speech problem or should hide it,anyway He/She will come to know
after marriage. Is it cheating not to tell about problem before marriage ?

Ater that we took group photo and concluded the meeting.

Attendee.

National Coordinator

Taking the SHG feedback SERIOUSLY (!), I announce JP as the Asst National Coordinator, who will replace me in 6 months to a year. We all know him, as one of the founders of TISA, of Pune SHG and as someone who has facilitated Communication workshops, NCs etc. etc.. list is long..
I am sure, you also know that in an open community like TISA, it is the SHGs and you as individuals, participants, volunteers - play a much bigger role than National Coordinator! Please continue playing your central and important role. National Coordinator is there to just facilitate flow of information and keep an oversight. Please help JP with that. Dont hesitate to drop him an email, if you have a bright idea or if you are facing some issues.
New readers, who may not know this "wonderful JP" can search/ browse old posts. One of his many posts, I have always enjoyed going back to, is this one. His Interview (part 1, part 2).
(NB: I am not going anywhere btw. No cave in Himalayas for me, I am afraid. But I do need some quiet time.) (Pic: JP getting feedback from a participant!)

2015 : Lessons from SHGs

We did an internal qualitative study of three SHGs – Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore. The objective was to consolidate learning from SHGs and share it back to SHGs, especially new ones. Here are the main lessons:

1. Continuity : Number of participants will NOT keep on growing up since stammering is a variable phenomena and pws do benefit from a variety of factors (besides SHG) in their life. They may participate for 6 months, improve and then move on. Old members get replaced by new ones. Sometime there is a GAP between old members leaving and new ones joining. During this period of discontinuity - organizational skills, structure and processes may get totally lost / disrupted. A new-comer may have to start all over again, from a scratch!

Pune SHG Report June 14, 2015

We had 5 members today: Gaurav, Amol, Sanjeet, Rupesh, and Pankaj. This is Pankaj's second meeting. The meeting started with a round of introduction in which everyone has to give a short introduction including hobbies too.  Pankaj is an engineering student. He loves trekking and horse riding. Next round we had a story telling activity. In which everyone has to speak one line and story will be formed. In next round everyone has to speak about how they are dealing with stammering in daily life. Everyone share their stories how they are dealing. Pankaj  also share his experiences with stammering. At last we had a round in which everyone has to speak about some specific topic Rupesh gave us some knowledge of Banking. I talked about the movie unstoppable. Gaurav talked about Rishikesh. Sanjeet talked about his new project and how he is handling it. Pankaj talked about his trekking experiences of forts near pune .Later we had some random chat and the meeting was over. (Writeup from Amol Karale).

Akash shared some challenges he was facing in his workplace and the entire came to his rescuse. Within minutes he was again smiling and felt better after sharing anfd getting valuable suggestions.
He also aksed some tips about remaining motivated and time-management and again the witty and smart Pws pitched in gave nice tips to our hero.

Siddharta told us about cognitive behaviour therapy and how it can be used by maintaining a thought log.

Hari shared about his standard Third incident in his school and we tried best to assuage his emotions.

On a lighter note we conducted Oath-taking ceremony of Mansi and hence forth she will be called Dr. Mansi. Oath-taking was presided over by Dinesh . Mansi vowed to stay loyal to the SHG and say whatever she feels like without hesitation.

(Received from Dnyanesh Kenkre, Goa)
I had gone to attend the YOUTH Seminar organized by Shri Ram Chandra Mission Meditation with around 500 people.
It was of 8 days..On the first day they showed one video clip and they told to speak on the topic which was showed on the video.
And it was a choice and no force at all to speak. Generally a person who is so shy....Forget about talking, even to show up his face to public can be a BIG challenge; same for one who speaks only sometimes, that too, only when he is very much forced to, by people.

Friends : Opportunities Galore..!

The legend goes that a mother wanted to help her child who stutters. In her quest, she reached out to many more children who stammer, their parents and also SLPs. And thus, the idea of FRIENDS convention was born.

In 2015, a young man dreamt of replicating the idea of “Friends” in India. The Mumbai self-help group coordinator Dhruv Gupta, who was the one to dare to dream this, also dared to materialize it. And thus, the first Friends convention was held in Mumbai, on 23-24 May in the beautiful campus of Somaiya College.

Dehradun SHG Meet 7th June - Joy of Stammering

This was certainly one of the most exciting meeting till now.One of the 'eminent' personalities of Delhi SHG joined us here- Ashish. We had a 'veteran' from TISA- Sumit. Then there was our 'most entertaining' member of Doon SHG- Dayal. The 'most excited' fella was none other than- Mohit. Let us take you all on the ride of Stammer Express !!

We all decided to meet at the famous Gandhi Park in Dehradun at 5:00 pm. But, as usual, most of the members were late with and exception of Dayal. Dayal was there in a classic Cowboy hat. He was certainly an attraction. Then by 5:30, all the four members were there.

Our first Station was Introduction. We all introduced ourselves turn by turn. We were seated in a circle and the fella who was supposed to introduce himself, was told to stand 5 feet away. This was done one intentionally so that he could speak louder and that too with stammer. Other people saw this and therefore it was in  away a exercise for relieving stress as well.

Then, we discussed about issues like what are the causes of stammer in our respective cases. Fear, loneliness and the dogmas of society were the culprit in our views.

Dayal was interested in reading paragraphs from the book. This was indeed a good idea because this helps us in learning ways of communicating in effective way. Every member read two paragraphs and then summarized the paragraphs in their own language. This way, we tend to focus on what we read and explain rather than how we read.

After all these activities, there comes the 'BAAP' of activities which is none than 'Strangers Talk'. Well all the members were excited enough and the same time trembling with utmost fear. Meanwhile, Mohit forgot his helmet at the Juice stall. He ran there and secured his helmet.

We made two groups of two members each. Dayal and Ashish on on side, Sumit and Mohit in the other. Dayal and Ashish approached three strangers each and discussed about the issues of stammering and our organization TISA.

Let me rewind a little. There is an NGO in Dehradun- Making a Difference by Being the Difference. These guys were celebrating their 4th anniversary by launching a signature campaign for reviving Dehradun's dying streams and at the same time performing a street act. So when we were busy with our activities, they approached us for our support for their cause. We grabbed the opportunity and discussed our issue as well. So this was a kind of symbiotic relationship.

The other group, Sumit and Mohit approached a girl and the head of the organisation MAD. They asked them about their first reaction on seeing a stammerer. Then we discussed about TISA as well. We exchanged numbers and showed an interest in each others cause.

Sumit is a theatre artist as well. And as we discussed earlier, MAD organized a street play. Sumit bagged the role of Corrupt Politician ! He enacted the act very well with amazing communication techniques. He was loud and clear, proper body gestures. And we were certain that theatre is a great way to counter your stammer.

Atlast we clicked pictures of our group. Ashish is missing because he needed to go for some urgent commitment. We pledged to meet again next week for which Dayal will be the host. Till then, Haklao Magar Pyaar Se....

Testimony

Testimony By Kulwindar (Participant of March2015 workshop)

24march को 1 PWS  का message आया :  tisa के grp me add ho.

Sir I SSSSSSStammer...

Hello friends
I've been a bit busy for the past few days and many incidents took place with me. Here is one...

2 weeks ago I qualified for SSC-CGL interview for which I went to a coaching for interview preparation. On Saturday I'd my first class and after giving lecture the teacher was telling us about soft-skills and communication skills. Everybody was asking their doubts related to that. I doubt came across my mind about my speech. I straight forward asked the teacher "Sir I SSSSSStammer" and his reaction was "It's not a big issue, My brother-in-law also stammers and to my knowledge it did not have any negative impact during the interview"
Although I knew that but why I told him is because in my school and college days I never had the courage to stand and tell the class that I Stammer. I just want to strengthen my Acceptance.
So guys don't hide, don't hesitate just speak out Loudly......YES I SSSSSSSSTAMMERRRRR.......

All the Best

Using filler words before the troubled word is dishonesty of me

Sometimes, when my heart would be full of fear....I would use filler words before speaking the troubled word to avoid the anticipated horrible moment of stammering. I think, this praactice is dishonesty. This practice means I am denying that I am a stammerer. Such a practice will simply delay my recovery process.

And, I am well aware that sooner or later, I would need to confront all those horrible moments of stammering because there is no way of skipping these things. Simply, I can't deny the reality that sometimes, stammering is the way to speak for me. Ideally, I should accept this dishonesty as well that I am dishonest sometimes and I shouldn't condemn myself. But, it is not happening. Such a moment of dishonesty makes me feel bad.

My motto- TO SPEAK EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO SPEAK TO ANYONE IN THIS WORLD.

I don't know, when I will achieve this stage.

Experience of Air Force Interview

Hello friends
Last week I went to Dehradun for my AFSB (Air Force Selection Board) interview. My interview was scheduled to be from 25th May. I reached Dehradun the evening before with my father and brothers.

On the morning of 25th I reached MCO at Dehradun Railway station. We were taken to the academy by bus. After giving instructions about the interview our phase 1 of testing started. Phase 1 consists of 2 basic test - psychological test and picture perception and discussion test (PPDT). Psychological test is a basic test of mental ability. After this we were taken to a hall for PPDT. We were shown a blurred picture on which we have to write a story. In the picture I perceived a group of people providing some medical help to the injured. I thought of linking it to the Nepal Earthquake as it is a recent incident that took place. Then we were taken to a testing hall for narration and discussion. My chance was second and as soon the first candidate started his narration my heart beat starting running like bullet train (even more than that...hahahha). But as suggested by Sachin Sir I tried to focus on my breathing and inhale and exhale long breath. This made things easy and when my turn came I started loudly and very soon that bullet train became bullock-cart...hahaha. Then we had a discussion on the story. I spoke thrice. This finished our phase 1 testing.

We then had our lunch. During lunch we were talking about the test. I asked a guy who was in my group about my narration. He told me that my narration was quite good. We started conversation. During the conversion I told him that I stammer and he was shocked at this. He didn't agree to accept it...but happily that is true. Another guy told me that my story was good and unique. While talking to other candidates I came to know that many are from my home city Jaipur. Candidates were eagerly waiting for result although I was quite from inside as my aim was not to get selected and I didn't get selected too. But my motive was to have a learning experience and I think this should be the motive of a PWS.

Theater Chalo!

Hi friends,
Its been almost two years since i started my journey in theatre. Its still a part-time involvement but sometimes it takes more than a full time.

Even though i admit that it has no magical cure for stammering which i actually believed to be when i joined theatre but still it is something incredible!! something that we must try in our life.  Playing some other character in an imaginary situation is so so challenging and the best part is the character changes with the next play. So you keep getting new challenges. Other benefit which i see is helping you improve your level of confidence. The ability to speak up in front of an audience. The other benefit is on your voice, pronunciation- Enunciation - Breathing right way - vocal exercises, all of it together helps you improve your communication. Overall i can say that It cannot really cure stammering but its not the only thing bothering you, more you are in the moment when you are acting, you will see it fading away eventually...

About the play;
This time my role is of an antagonist. Do come watch me perform. Its just after your office timings. The play is in Hindi and titled as "Shagaaf". Here is the overall detail of tomorrow's event:

Saarthak Productions presents:
Tales Of Existence - A Collection Of 2 One Act Plays in Hindi & English

He has created an imaginary persona of himself and tries to resolve his own fears and illusions through it. It's an exploration into the basic questions of life, where the answers lies within.

OUTSIDE
Written and directed by Shaurya Singh
Language: English

“Outside” is a one act play in the genre of Theatre of the Absurd. It explores the human condition of being trapped. Outside tells the story of five people - Jim, Tina, Samuel, Claire and Edgar who find themselves in an unknown place and have to find out why they are there and if there is a way out. Will they make it out? Or are they doomed to be stuck forever?

Going against the mind!!

Some days you stammer more than usual and your mind would ask you speak less. Your mind would tell you- Look man, today you are stammering like hell. You are making craziest faces every time you go into a block. Every time you are trying to win over these blocks, they beat you like anything making your ass swollen red like a monkey's bum. So, don't you have the common sense. For today, you are going to speak as less as possible. Every thing will be fine by tomorrow and then you can speak as much as you want.

And, in most of the cases, we obliged.

But, can we do next time a little different. Next time, when you have a bad day in terms of speech, BE OUTSPOKEN. Wear the mask of an OUTSPOKEN man forcefully. Keep on talking. Make all those crazy faces. make all those failed attempts of speech. And...and....ACCEPT THOSE CRAZY FACES AND THOSE FAILED ATTEMPTS OF SPEECH WHEN YOU JUST CAN'T GET THE WORDS OUT OF YOUR BLOODY MOUTH. That can be the moment of TRUE ACCEPTANCE

Sunday.10 am. Sharp !

Ceiling.Happy.Sad.Badminton.Seven.Meeting.SHG.Sunday.Travel.Lunch.Play.Masti.Sleep.Ten.

Well , to solve your doubts , this isnt a class 4 child writing its handwriting homework but these are the disorganised thoughts that flash in my scattered mind on every Sunday morning !!

Every day is an ‘ok ok’ day for me but I wake up on Sunday with full enthusiasm. REASON - You all know it’s the meetup day with our folks of SHG.

Sunday sharp 10 am , Cubbon park !  ...... Now I know , Dinesh might exclaim WHAT! HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ON TIME TO SHG !!. Well , let me not worry about answering that now !

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Sunday , as usual I played badminton with my friends but dear(?!) Akash and Nishil didn’t turn up although they had promised to do so. After playing for an hour , I left for the meeting and I could see only 3 groups of 2 people speaking with themselves in our usual spot.

Just think ,... everytime I come to shg , there is a group of 10-15 people sitting in a circle. But I was surprised and taken aback to see 3 groups of 2 people standing far away from each other and speaking to themselves for a long time. Anyone would think there is something amiss.

But later i got to know that it was the "Introduce the other person " round. This is where one person would introduce another person, unlike everytime , where we introduce ourselves !

So , Akash and Rohit went first, then Nishil and lohith introduced each other. Dinesh and reuben introduction gave us some startling truths( about our dear dinesh). Then it was my turn and I was given the job of introducing Pramod ( He missed the SHG on that day ) . After this , since Tapan joined us all last , he told us the things he knows about everyone in the group.

Takeaways from this round !
1) We learn more about the other person.
2) We learn to introduce others and give some more work to our brain.
3) Surprisingly , some of us introduced others better than the way they would introduce themselves !! ;)

Then the next round was a new one rather than the usual table topics , speech etc. We were told to make back to back ( to back ... ) calls to someone enquiring anything of our choice and getting the best rates out of them.

Just dial came to our rescue and after we enquired about one thing , calls started pouring on our mobiles. One of the group member got so fed up that he didn’t even stop to ask their names and was jumping to get the quotes. ( Sorry for the over-exaggeration )

Some enquired about hotel buffet rates , some hotel lodging rates and others the car of our choice. We spoke continuously for half an hour or more ,that people walking through the park got surprised seeing 8 people speaking at a time on phone. (... facing different directions and highly engrossed in talk ). It was a sight to watch !

Later we spoke about what we enquired about , what their response was and what was the least quote we could get. Finally it was a good experience and a lesson on how to save money by negotiating.
Thinking about that now , I feel that it was ‘Father’ Dinesh’s trick to get us thinking about quotes and to forget stammering. We were so involved in asking prices and speaking to different people that i don’t think anyone cared if they  stuttered or not.

Yes , isnt it everyones experience that when we are engrossed in something , we forget everything including "the s t a m m e r i n g "

After meet: Five of us went for lunch in a nearby hotel , occasion being AKASHs birthday. We also visited nearby Gurudwara.

PS : I am still getting calls to come and test drive Mahindra e2o electric car, thanks to SHG .  :D
