Points of View

I came across many interesting and valid view points in this last CommWS. Let us share them for the wider benefit of our audience.
  1. “When you talk about Acceptance, I feel good. When you talk about techniques, my head begins to burst..”
This coming from a young man, made me quite happy: he had realized the usefulness of acceptance in day to day life. Because, even if you become President of America, many things will go against your wish and you will have to accept them all the same (like Sandy!).

Herbutpur workshop--day two

I found that somehow day two of Herbutpur workshop could not be posted successfully on our blog so i am hereby posting it again.....

Day two started at 7.00.AM with meditation session on request of some PWS. Mr lalit Pandey who also joined with four more PWS, guided us in meditation. As a beginner we found it difficult to continuously monitor our breath but we learnt the technique which is very simple and easy to practice in daily life. Dr. Vijay who is also a PWS and speech therapist also joined today. We found him very confident in delivering speech with minimal stammering.
Dr Sachin demonstrated breathing exercise and correct way of doing abdominal breathing. Especially Dr. Vijay (Homeopath) who is also a PWS found it very useful in his case. Dr Sachin explained in brief about Budhism & Jain way of meditation and a technique that can be practiced while walking, also called ‘walking meditation’.
Next one and half hour we practice bouncing and prolongation techniques in detail and learnt how to adapt these techniques in our daily routine. We found it very useful in clearing our speech block.
Mr Sumit (PWS) who study in class IX in public school in Dehradun visited for short duration. He has been continuing with TISA for past several years and we found his attitude very positive which amaze all of us. Although he was the youngest among us but he immensely inspired all of us.
We had an exercise in which we made fun of our stammering. We enjoyed many parodies on stammering which were like this.
’chahe mujheh koi hakla kahe…..kehne ho to kehta rahe……….’
‘main hakla kyoun hoon……….’
‘Chalte chalet yunhee rukh jaata hoon main….’
While Dr. Sachin was away for a while, we had a brief session where we did mimic other PWS in front of them. it was difficult to control our laughter, Mr. Amit emerged as a mimickery master. Yesterday also, at Lake Assan he copied the likes of Nana Patekar, Sunil Shetty and Sharukh Khan with perfection.
We call end of the day by shouting ‘main haklata hoon ‘loudly in coffee house.

Herbutpur workshop--day3

Herbutpur Communication workshop –day 3

We started the 3rd day again with meditation under guidance of Dr. Sachin. This is a Budhist technique according to which we are required to feel the warmness of breath as we inhale & exhale through our body. Next we learnt Emotional Freedom Technique to erase our negative emotions and replace it by positive one. One can know about it more on internet in Youtube.
After tea, we got assembled at OPD area of the hospital where and we repeated the same activity that we did yesterday (but this time strength of pubic was much more than previous day i.e 60 or 70 persons) but amazingly this time we all felt comfortable in admitting our stammering before public (perhaps by this time we had become less rigid as compared to the first day). We found most of the people were carefully listening to us; some of them were even clapped on our effort and this is inspit of the fact that these people were not very educated.
After lunch, we were taken to student’s classroom where we, again gave presentations in bit detail before a group of young girls who were undergoing nursing training course in the hospital. It was very useful especially for our young PWS who always got nervous in front of females.
In concluding session Dr.sachin gave important tips & instruction to be followed. We all enjoyed every moment of this workshop that we will cherish for long time to come. We have no words to express our gratitude toward respected Dr.Sachin for his painstaking effort in organizing this event.

I have attended two courses of vipassana in four months .

Question -- Will Vipassana cure my stammering ??

Answer --- Clearly a Big ' NO ' - not at all . Your stammering will remain same as it was before attending the course .

But it will reduce the after effect of stammering - not only stammering but of everything , anything you face or encounter in your life.It will change your way of living and will teach you how to actually LIVE .

So Please DONOT go for VIPASSANA for CURING or REDUCING your stuttering / stammering .

** i will write more regarding this .

Herbutpur communication workshop- day one

(In OPD, Inaugural session with Dr Martha, Individual presentation while using techniques)

Yesterday we started one more communication workshop for PWS here in Anugrah Hospital, Herbetpur under facilitation of Dr Sachin. There were around 14 PWS attend this event on first day.  Activities took place on day one was like this.
  1. Meeting started with formal introduction by each participant. Dr. Sachin asked everybody to stammer openly and deliberately while giving their introduction. It followed by a game which demonstrate that how bad listener generally we PWS are. We were asked to toss a pen to anyone in group turn by turn, and that person has to recall the name of the person tossed the pen at him. Except few, many people could not recall the name. it is the fact that PWS seldom try to focus on content of the speaker , rather they got struck to the fancy of style & fluency of t speaker or else worried about their turn for.
  2.  We played another game called ‘BUM ‘which demonstrated that inelegance level of a stammer is as good or bad as that of normal person. We PWS are under the misconception that we are above average in intelligence level as compared to normal persons.
  3.  Dr Sachin invited Dr. Martha (non-stammer) working in Anugrah hospital as pathologist, to deliver her views about stammering. We were asked to narrate something in brief to Dr. Martha maintaining eye contact with her and without caring about their stammering. Dr. Martha also shared her views about stammering and general perception about PWS from female point of view. As a non PWS she felt it is absolutely ok if somebody stammer as there are much more serious problems exist in this world which has got no cure in medical science. We are fortunate enough that at least it is possible to reduce severity of stammering within acceptable limit.
  4.  Now, everybody was asked to wear a batch bearing ‘ Main huklata hoon…. Pl pay attention while listening to me’ printed on it.  After that we were supposed to go down and interact with non-stammer staff of the hospital and get introduced our self by stammering deliberately. At first it looked weird and we felt reluctant in doing so but everybody accepted it slowly felt relaxed after doing so.
  5.  Extending same activity as mentioned above we were asked to go down in a lobby were OPD patients were sitting and give our introduction as PWS. This again was very embarrassing moment but slowly we all shed off their inhibition and we all made fun of our self in pubic. This really eases pressure on our mind. We realized that it is not a sin to accept before world that we are “Hakla’. In next round, turn by turn everyone cracked joke by deliberating stammering on punch line. By this time everybody got free from all fear and stammered openly in public. It was really mind blowing. Perhaps everybody got a chance to crack joke before a group for the very first time in their life.
  6.  After lunch we learnt the technique of bouncing and prolongation technique.
  7.  In evening we all went to a Assan lake were we enjoyed coffee in group and played some more game though not related to stammering.
We called off the day by shouting’ Main huklata hoon’ loudly in coffee house.

Delhi SHG report of 21st Oct at Rajiv Chowk

First of all, Happy International Stuttering Awareness day !!!!!
Our SHG was very nice, again as-usual the venue was our best place , Central Park, Rajiv Chowk which is a Centre of Delhi. We were 8 Member(jitender, abhishek, shri prasad, jagdish, anuj , jp sir,  rishab, me) met together and started the Meeting. This SHG was Little more inspiring-Full because we got lots of tips and tools from JP Sir who was also  the member of our SHG so we had started our SHG meeting at 12 o clock and Firstly JP sir explained the ground Rule of SHG and then our First Round was introducing yourSelf and then we did a new activity it was just for checking and making the listening skill because listening is the most powerful tool for speaking,
Our task was that one man was spoking his name with add  an adjective which start from the same character as first character of his name and then he said adjective+his name again the next man add previous man adjective+name and add his name and adjective  so cyclicly, it was going on so this task showing that how much you  have listen skill and our next task was Tung Twister which always help a lot and the third task was sharing what is stammering? by own and this round was very nice because every one had their own experiences and understanding.

So overall  it tells that " Stammering is a problem but with fear it become worse and with positiveness it become fluent(stammering-less) so overall the conclusion is that if you confront yourself then you can do anything whatever you want , its all the game of your mind and thought. It is really a truth and Finally JP Sir distributed the Self Help Manual "apna haath jaganath"  :) :)

Well done Guys! It takes courage to talk to media about stammering and its a great therapy too.

Fluency: My Untrustworthy Friend

To celebrate ISAD, let me share this beautiful essay from Reuben Schuff; The essence could be conveyed in one line : For a young stammerer, search for fluency lasts a life time, is full of ups and downs- and finally what you learn is much much more precious and meaningful than mere fluency. So what did Reuben finally learn? Read on..
You can buy this stuttertalk publication -pdf version- full of very useful essays, at this link.

* This is a day where you can freely spread your own knowledge about stuttering to others
* This is a day where you can set your goals and task

Kundan From Kala Amb, Engineering College

Hello friends,
I am so happy to be back to you with my experiences I went through in
recent days. I candidly recognise that it was not easy for me to stay out of seminars,SHG'S & GET TOGETHERS but due to my study commitment I was not able to attend these group activities, but believe me teachings of TISA Communication workshops have always remained with me.
While spending time with the similar peoples you gain strength for
facing real life problems, you never feel shy about your
stammering, these certainly boost up your confidence,no matter where
you work, where you study, but stammering communities are like our
family.
On 6th oct this month, there was seminar in my college, where HOD'S from Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Amity university, and
NIT-kurukshetra had come as resource persons.
During the seminar, I ventured out of my comfort zone and was actively involved in questioning and answering. Because i knew''MORE THE TIME YOU SPEND IN YOUR DISCOMFORT ZONE,YOUR COMFORT ZONE EXPANDS.
A- S- sir(amity univ),went on bragging about himself,about his
ability and intelligence,,,,I suddenly got the chance, stood up and
said "there is nothing amazing in that ,because you have come
prepared..." (I did have difficulty at -"prepared"- but I said it)  After that I was his focus- in a nice way- and I attentively learnt minutes
of management.
In this way I proved myself better than non-stammerer.
I would be happy if you talk to me,share your experience so that we
can learn more from each other in nurturing manner.

Pune shg report 21 oct 2012

We had an activity of voluntary stuttering today. I had informed about it earlier to all members. But only Pradeep was there at the decided venue. Pradeep is a student of Mtech. He is regular for shg’s.Our venue was SGS MALL, M.G ROAD,PUNE.We both reached the mall by 11am.Pradeep asked about my coorg trip.He asked what you learn from the get together. We both had a talk about coorg till 11.30 am.But to my surprise no other member came. Then we both decided that we are here to do some voluntary stammering ‘toh challo lets do it’. Few months ago I   had performed same kind of activity in some mall. So i have little bit knowledge about voluntary stammering. I explained pradeep what we did last time, how we talked with people, what questions to be asked.

Tactile feedback gadget

Yadgar has sent this link:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/science/Now-a-device-to-help-stutterers-speak-fluently/articleshow/16900517.cms

It claims to reduce stuttering by working thru tactile feedback. This is all I was able to learn from the article. If you have access to the gadget- please write to us.

Seminar and Oral OHH no!!!

Seminar and viva, whenever a pws heard these words .The fear starts griping them. I also fear these words.

Last week and the current week i was flooded with orals, seminar etc. I had given all seminars and orals.
Earlier it was a message that every student must prepare seminar on any technology related topic for about 20-25 minutes later it was reduced to 10-15 minutes. One more thing I thought that seminar has to be given in front of whole class and teachers but the irony was that it has to be given only in front of the allotted teachers only who are going to judge seminar. It’s like happiness with tears I was ready to stammer in front of the whole class. I don’t have any problem in college now a days as my classmates and teachers know about it.

For SHG Coordinators..

Most of us want to learn how to speak well. But in order to say "relevant things", we must listen and find out the context. We all have been in an interview, where we jumped the gun, answered the question which was never asked, started an escalating misunderstanding and paid the price! Listening is a VERY important but much ignored skill. TISA will request every one to read this essay from Rita Thurman, USA (quoted from the Stuttertalk book- Stuttering: Inspiring Stories and Professional Wisdom). Our deepest gratitude!

Stammering is contagious........really?

I am not sure if i have used the appropriate title to, what i really want to say here.

It was day before yesterday only when i talked to Mr.Hemant jangra over phone and he shared that it was a bad stammering day for him.

And, i just shared some of my words that how should he react to such situations and how we should accept those FOREVER BLOCKS too.

And, the next day itself, i too experienced few of those FOREVER blocks........although i reacted far easy than before, but, still, it pained.

So, sometimes, i have felt that if you are going quite well and some of your stuttering friend  shares his speaking problems with you, you may feel the problem in yourself too.

Basically, what i conclude, our mind is so afraid of STUTTERING that just a hint of it and it starts to tremble with fear.

That is why i used the word CONTAGIOUS here.

May be a reason behind the avoidance behavior of stammerers to other stammerers as they might thought that spending more time with another stammerer may increase their own stammering.

But such fearful avoidance is not going to let you live freely. In this way, you are just hiding the wound under some dressing, although you know that letting it heal in open is going to work in long run.

So, the bottom line is that we should accept all the aspects of stuttering.................that will be the real cure.

First SHG Meet in Patiala..

In Patiala we are 2 PWS, Manjot and Me, we jointly attend Chandigarh SHG twice, but not meet in Patiala in formal setup. On Tuesday we meet in evening, firstly we go for long walk and have amazing  talk about stammering management strategies. After that we sit in a park nearby, and read some chapters from New SHG manual and discuss it, My Aim is to including manjot in talks and to get his views. we spend 2-3 hours and conclude with promise to meet on 21/10/2012 (Sunday).

So any interested PWS can join us

TISA BARODA INITIATION
Finally I am very pleased to inform you that we have very first meet of TISA in Baroda (Vadodara), Gujarat on this last Sunday, 14th Oct. Me (Abhijeet) and Rakesh were there near Aavishkar Complex, O.P. Road in Baroda. We both discussed about lot many things. Rakesh shared his lot many problems regarding stammering. Rakesh learnt lot many facts about stammering and we also decided some few targets about the same. First of all we decided to talk in very slow manner and also to maintain eye contact with the next person whenever we are talking.  Actually this was the first meet in Baroda and not accordingly planned. So there were not any details on the website. But I hope I will get more response from Baroda residents. Very soon we will have next meeting.

Eye contact with boss is a tough deal. Only for stammerers????

It has been quite difficult for me to have eye contact with  my big brother at school time and similarly now with all the HOD's here in my factory.

Even when my direct boss or senior boss used to be in good mood and they want to share some light moments with me......i feel a bit uncomfortable in having FULL EYE CONTACT with them.

Today also, in the late evening, when my direct boss called me in his office; as usual i enteted his office and waited for his directions in standing mode only. You know, sitting in your boss's chair is very fatal.Sitting on a chair in his office means you are free enough to take some additional assignments, which he always have in abundant.....so i stood up....waiting for his directions.....

He said in a light mood- sit down friend (baitho yaar ashish). And he discussed some of the routine office issues with me as if i am his deputy.....Should have been a cheerful moment for me, but i was a bit stressful and finding it difficult to have eye contact with him, although he seemed happy with my performance.

Any how, after some discussion, he called me to take a chair beside him in front of his monitor to draft some mails for him.He actually hates replying to official e-
mails... :-)

While drafting the mails, sitting besides him, i was uncomfortable and i was stuttering severely.

He was co-operative as always.

So after that little stint in his office, i was back to my table. Then i thought that it is not only stammering that is the culprit here.

Then i remembered the moments when even at home, i didn't felt comfortable even with my father and brother.

So stuttering have caused  it or this my BASIC NATURE have caused stuttering............a question here!!!

Happy losers!

A young pws has asked me a blunt question; he has also asked me “not to side-step the issue”!
So, with all the honesty and sincerity at my command, I will try and answer the question: how useful is speech therapy for stammering?
Speech therapy is quite useful for conditions like Mis-articulation, Nasal voice, Paralytic aphasia etc. When it comes to stammering, speech therapy (as it is practiced in India) is of little use. Yes, I am comparing the usefulness of stammering therapy with therapy for other conditions (like Mis-articulation, Bronchitis, Tuberculosis etc.) and - find it NOT useful. Why?

Do we endorse Therapist A or B?

Some members have raised an important question: Does TISA promote or endorse a particular Therapist or a Therapy? Do we endorse the therapists who attend our events? Do we endorse therapist A more than therapist B? With due respect to all the therapists and their therapeutic approaches, our answer is NO! We don’t endorse any therapist or therapy or gadgets (like DAF) nor do we promote them. That is simply not our MANDATE.

TISA promotes and endorses two things: Acceptance of people who stammer and Self-help. These two themes are our founding principles. Please check this page to understand why TISA was formed in the first place and what was the true purpose behind it. Please help us promote these values, if you can..

BUT you have every right to go to any therapist you want to, as long as you do not involve TISA directly or indirectly. Our clear stand on this issue is formulated at our website at this page. Please check that out.

We will continue to promote self (mutual) help, tried and tested modalities in public domain like Vipassana and communication skills on our blog, website, get-togethers etc (for example, check how Vinod has been influenced by our latest NGT here). TISA is your home where you are free to speak the way you want to and where no one will judge you based on your speech and other superficial differences; where you are accepted as you ARE. Feel free to write to us whatever you feel about this issue. But please read the links mentioned above! And also the editorial policy of TISA blog!

Just 3 months before, I attended first TISA event - communication workshop at delhi on 14-15 july2012.
that communications workshop was निष्पक्ष आईना  for आत्ममंथन  .
इस workshop की दूसरी प्रभावी activity थी राह चलते लोगो से हकलाहट के बारे मे सवाल पूछना  पहली बार ये प्रत्यक्ष जानने का मौका मिला कि हकलाने पर लोगो की प्रतिक्रिया क्या होती हैये जाना कि हकलाने में लज्जा-घृणा-भय जैसी कोई बात ही नहीं है  people takes it very easy then any PWS.I attended and returned with changed mindset. But after some days, I again returned on same old track.
second communication workshop, I attended at herbertpur on 1-3 september.
I read many hypnotism books and attended some session. किसी को सम्मोहित करने के लिये क्या किया जाता है- generally उसकी आंखों मे आंखे डालकर उसे निर्देश देना शुरु किया जाता है  Sir ने जोर दिया आंखों मे आंखे डालकर बात करो , keep eye contact during speaking  and friends, really eye contact reduces stammering to a large extent. It is like boon to Baali (a character in ramayn epic, who had capacity  to extract half power of his rivals and add in himself)
So I am doing only 3 things
1. Surya namaskar (for physical fitness)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pFlw7kaikg
2. Keep eye contact (hypnotism)
3. Playing with speech system with variations in volume & pitch (for hard word or any song)
http://www.ehow.com/video_2385250_the-mi-ma-mo-mu.html
& results are really miraculous. And Thanks TISA to provide all PWS a big platform to enhance comfort zone as well as communication skill.

Self Help Manual in Print!!

Dear all,

As most of you have been already reading feedback from the participants at Coorg and that what a great meeting it was! We forgot to inform you about another exciting thing that happened at Coorg:

( Mr Manimaran launching the book on 2nd day at Coorg )

We launched our first publication in print thanks to Dr Sachin(who took all the pains to write this very good and practical book), Mr Raja Poladi (who made this publication possible with his generous grant) and all the other volunteers who believed and participated in the communication workshops of TISA (most of the activities and chapters are a result of our work in the communication workshops and the feedback that we have got from people.)

If you want a printed copy, please email us at info[at]stammer.in .You can also download a pdf copy from http://stammer.in/publications/NewSHManual.pdf . You may also want to listen to this podcast where Dr Sachin is discussing the book with Peter Reitzes from Stuttertalk.

Order copies and give it to a person who stammers or to school/college library or any local library so that people who don't have access to internet can read it too. Also we are looking for people who can translate the book to other Indian languages. Please contact us if you are interested.

Please send your feedback at info[at]stammer.in . Remember feedback is a gift that we love at TISA :-)

Am i hoping against hope ?

Kisse poochu, hai aisa kyu
Bejubaan saa ye jahaan hai

Khushi ke pal kahaan dhoondu?
Benishaan sa waqt bhi yahaan hai

Jaane kitne labon pe gile hai

Zindagi se kayi faasle hain

Base jitte hai sapne kyun aankhon mein
Lakeere jab chhoote in haathon se yun bewajah

Jo bheji thi duaa
Woh jaake aasmaan se yun takra gayi
Ki aa gayi hai laut ke sadaa .....

Talking to boss over phone........with severe stammering!!!

Hope, quite clear from the title itself, what this post is all about!!!

These days, somewhat struggling to be more and more AUTHENTIC about my way of speaking, usually i feel as if my mind is divided into 2 parts......one part always behaves as if a decent, social, humble one while other one is a WILD,RISK TAKING and sometimes really CRAZY one.

Today it self in the office, i was having sort of severe stammering throughout.....still, trying to accomplish all my job targets and completing all the verbal communication requirements.

At evening after a number of really exhausting speaking experiences, while i was busy in a task given my my senior boss (boss of the boss), i come across an idea of making the task more fruitful than the original expectation.Generally, i used to implement those ideas readily and grab the extra bit of appreciation while sharing the results with the senior officials, but, today, my latter part of mind (who always enjoys pushing me in trouble) suddenly come up with a fresh trick to let me face the HELL.

It reminds me of brave people like adolf hitler, prithvi raj singh chauhan, alexander the great.........and push me to talk to my senior boss and get his permission for the implementation of my idea..........with the logic that if i can do it....i will be more open about my stammering and this courageous act will make me more OPEN about my stammering.

My humble part of mind (the former one) opposed it immediately- it would be a foolish act  Man!!!  Generally such good ideas are expected to be implemented by yourself........by the way,you are an executive here......by asking for his permission, you will show your lack of common sense.Don't do it all!!

Any how, as always, the CRAZY part wins with a step ahead..........i.e. it succeeded in making me asking for his permission at the PHONE........nothing more can be asked for!!!!

I stammered very badly............SSSSSSSSSSSSS...............SSSSSSSSSSSS...........ooffffffoooooooooo..SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSir...............anyhow, i completed my words............and he was very generous in letting me complete.

So, moral of the story is-----well actually, i don't know the moral..............let's see what you guys have to say about it??
