Press meet in Herbertpr

The Herbertpur group organised a press meet (above) today and spoke to journalists from the regional media (Dainik Jagran, Dainik Prabhat, AtoZ channel) and shared our concern about the Golmaal 3: it promotes stereotypes, caricatures a health condition with significant suffering and that it will promote teasing, bullying, harassment of people and children who stammer. We started with screening of the clip in question, followed by discussion on our grounds for objections and the notices issued by the High court, Nainital on 30th Oct. 2010. Copy of judgment and the press note was issues. Vineet, Nishu, Pawan and Permanand told the journalists how & why they found the clip insulting and hurtful. Youngest member of our group, Siddharth, too shared the same sentiment. (Video below). Listen carefully for his verdict on the movie- as a child who stammers.
We wish to thank Mr Sanjay Jain for helping us organize it at a very short notice.

I am wrong, wrong, WRONG..

If therapy fails, it must be my mistake..
If I fail interview, I should have spoken more carefully..
If people ridicule me, I must have given them the reason..
If I dont get the promotion, it must be my mistake..
If I am teased, I should not protest- I should act "mature";
I should take it "gracefully"..
If teacher did not ask me any question in the class, he must be in a hurry..
If people hurry me, they must be short of time...
If they smile when I talk, they could not have helped it..
If they imitate me, they did not mean anything; I should not feel bad..
If they caricature me in a movie, I should not protest-
Why should we deny people "Good" entertainment??
If I dont ask question, it is okay- because silence is golden!
Because- They must be right; I must be wrong.
They must be right; I must be wrong.
I must be wrong, wrONG, WRONG..
.....
..

Our protest against the portrayal of stammering in the movie (Golmaal 3) gave rise to all kind of reactions outside and inside the IPWS community. Some reactions inspired me to write the above poem. It represents the ultimate degradation caused by stammering.. It is the ultimate insult to our intellect, our spirit..
God, please save us from this!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Nainital HC has issued notices to respondents (including Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision ltd and others) on our plea that the promo clips of the movie show stammering in very poor light. It promotes stereotypes and teasing, harassment, discrimination against people (including children) who stammer. It makes fun of stammerers (PWS) for cheap humor and to make money- for commercial interests. It denigrates and trivializes a health condition which actually causes considerable emotional suffering and setbacks in life. The Hon'ble judges have taken a favorable note of our prayer. The Community of Indians who stammer (which includes our families and friends) wish to thank them and Advocate Renu D Singh and Adv Prabha Nautiyal (Pic above) for this valuable service to our search for acceptance and dignity, as enshrined in Indian Constitution.

We will be putting up scanned images of the order here soon. Please print it and call a press meeting in your town and other public bodies and share it with them. Tell them, write to them, why YOU and TISA is opposing such caricaturing of a neuro-biological communication disorder in a powerful mainstream media like movies. Because the message which goes out through such movies is: It is okay to tease, imitate, harass, bully someone who stammers..
Well, it is NOT okay.

Please support us, since this is only the first small step. We are planning a Press meeting in Dehardun in next 2-3 days to share this verdict with media, Social welfare minister (UK) and others. Keep checking this space. Plesae send your contributions to Shri Nitin Tomar (Founding Trustee, TISA).

Progress: Legal recourse

I am in Nainital Highcourt. The Samadhan Collective of Human Rights advocates are helping us. The petition is final and would be put up for consideration soon. Our arguments are based on some of following concerns:
  • Such movies (based on the promos seen at Youtube and on TV) will promote teasing, harassment and discrimination against children and people who stammer. This problem is already there in society and it would further be worsened. SLPs know that teasing contributes greatly to development of stammering in growing years.
  • Such depiction strengthens the idea that it is okay to tease people who are different- that it is okay to ignore the emotional hurt it causes to people concerned.
  • It promotes the stereotypes (not the scientific facts) about PWS- they are dull, slow witted etc.
  • It promotes questionable kind of content and humor in a very powerful public media (Censor board should have been more thoughtful and proactive)- thus lowering morals of the society, as to what behavior is okay and what is not.
We hope to create a society which accepts and acknowledges the diversity, with which we are born or which we may chose, later in life, based on our discretion. A society which is more inclusive and creative.

Our online initiative is doing very well. But we cant sit back..Keep writing out, talking about it and doing whatever you can..
TISA thanks all of you for your support and prayers. And EXPECTS more!

Mai to atakane wala pirated CD hoon..

Mai to atakane wala pirated CD hoon..
(I get stuck like the pirated CD..)
Yes, this is a dialogue from Golmaal-3 !!
Okay, now the class bully has one more wise-crack to tease and harass the child who stammers! How creative!

The press kit of the movie has following hifalutin stuff about the producers of this movie, which makes fun of people's disability so callously:
Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision limited (SACVL) has a clear mission - to become one of the most prominent and respectable companies in the Indian entertainment sector keeping values, commitment and discipline intact...
How wonderful! They want to ride the shoulders of Indian stammerers and their disability and become number one in the industry! And the values they promote? God save us from such creative directors and producers!

Humiliating portrayal of stammerers in Hindi movie - Golmal 3

Hi,

Today morning while having breakfast at home, I saw a promo of a forthcoming Hindi movie – Golmal 3.This promo portrayed stutterers in a very bad light, like they are dim-wits of people with less intelligence.

I consider myself quite thick-skinned and am not usually offended. But this propose was plain tasteless and offensive. I would be very uncomfortable if I watch it with my kids. What they will think about me?

These kind of trashy movies aren’t my scene and I haven’t seen any movies from this director; but my wife tols me that this director has a history of making fun of people’s handicaps. In his earlier movies, he had used a blind couple and a guy who cannot speak as props.

We cannot let this go on forever. Somewhere we will have to take a stand, and put a stop to this kind of crap. I talked to Sachin and we have decided to go against it full throttle. We want to make an example of it – not only to this movie-maker but to everybody. That we cannot and will not be shoved around.

We have decided to file a petition against the movie in Nainital high-court (TISA is registered in Uttarakhand); and will also be running online campaigns to raise awareness about stuttering and how Golmal 3 is making fun of it. We have the following in mind –

1. Petition in Nainital High Court – Sachin will be doing it.
2. Online petition to sensor board, Ministry of I&B, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare – JP will drive it. But he will need your help init. We need as many people to sign it as we can. We are looking at 40-50K kind of numbers. Please spread it amongst your friends and colleagues and ask them to sign it.
3. Post about it on as many online forums as we can – Pawas, can you help us here?
4. Contact influential media houses, movie reviewers. Ask them to write about how this movie is crass and tasteless in its portrayal of PWS – Kiran, we need your help here.

I will be coordinating and channelizing the whole efforts.

If you guys can think of anything else, please suggest. The idea is to generate as much noise as we can.

Also we will need some money for the high-court petition. Please donate.

All of us have been made fun of at some time or the other due to our speech; let’s put a stop to this.

Regards

Nitin

Pune SHG - 24th Oct 2010

This Sunday we all met yet again, but this time we bid farewell to two very prominent members, viz JP and YR. The strength this time was quite impressive. We discussed about whole lot of things and cracked many jokes too. Amit told about his new company and his ordeals with the trainings. Praveen was all praise for the efforts put in by JP ever since he revived the Pune SHG from dormancy. YR was leaving for Delhi and she is now engaged and going to marry next month. Sujit listened to the proceedings with rapt attention. Meanwhile Suraj joined and told us about his next adventure plan. Rupesh then enlightened us about some spiritual gyan emanating from Osho etc. Mahesh was playing pranks most of the time during the meet, but nobody seemed to mind. Sanjeet also spoke a lot and wished the departing parties good luck. To conclude this meet on high note, I presented JP with a white T-shirt (with stammer quotes) as a token of appreciation for his contribution to Pune SHG.

Meanwhile JP threw an idea that we should include our girlfriends, spouses, mothers and fathers too in the SHG meets. This will help all of us to understand stammer related issues more objectively. That is when Pravin offered to invite all of us to his house for a cup of tea. To save Pravin’s wife the pain of cooking food for all of us, we decided to eat in a hotel and then leave for Pravin’s place, which is what we did and embarked on a fun ride.

And THIS was when hell broke loose.

All of us like kids started screaming and riding bikes like there is no tomorrow. We all had to assemble at Katraj which is a far cry from the SHG meet’s venue. We promised to stick together throughout the ride but unfortunately some of us lagged behind. Later, after a lot of phone-calling and clarifying, finally all of us managed to reach Pravin’s residence. There we greeted Pravin’s lovely daughter and pleasing wife. Both of them welcomed us and we were all touched by their hospitality. After having tea and some biscuits we started talking about the recently concluded workshop. JP started sharing and explaining about the various presentations, group discussions and photos on his laptop. People who could not make it to the workshop were ruing about their inability to attend the event. I then pacified them saying that TISA will soon organize a workshop.

After saying bye to Pravin and Family, we started our return journey, but this time we were in a strange hurry to make home soon. Guess part of the reason was that it was getting dark. Along the way, Sujit and Rupesh dispersed. Mahesh, JP, Manohar, Amit and YR halted near a church to attend the mass for a very brief moment. Gradually we all had to disperse saying and wishing each other a very best of luck.

I wish such outings and family interactions are conducted more often.

What is diability?

Next time, you feel down, you feel like- "if only I didn't stammer, I could do this and that" and all such thoughts, watch this video :

CHANDIGARH SHG MEET # 2 REPORT

Dear Friends,
Good Afternoon,
On 24.10.2010 sunday afternoon at 3 pm myself, Mr. Mohit, Mr. Ishan again formally met together to review our progress at sector 33 park chandigarh. With the efforts of Mr. Mohit we had 3 more visitors viz. Mr. Prem Nath from Dhuri , Mr. Prem from Fazilka and one more person whose name is not being disclosed on his request. Credit for bringing them in meeting goes to Mohit who motivated them to come , who are taking the treatment from a local therapist. We started the meeting with laughter session. Then we did meditation as last time, followed by reading paras in slow speed from a newspaper. We also did some exercises to relax our speech organs. Then each one of us narrated our experiences in slow voluntary stuttering method. It was a sweet surprise to note the both Mohit and Ishan have improved a lot in their speech and were congratulated accordingly. The visitors were speaking in slow singing way as was being told by their therapist. They were suggested to try voluntary stuttering method. The need for total acceptance of the problem was also again emphasied , which is the key and first step towards coming over the problem.
The meeting ended with laughter session and promise to meet again next week end. We dispersed after taking hot tea.
Dear brothers and sisters in and around chandigarh are requested to join the group and come out of handicapcy.

A wide angle view of therapy..

This is a report from Yahoo/IPWS:

I'm really sorry to hear that sh-----. Even i had paid 5G to AH (don't want to name the guy in Pune) for therapy, and saying that i was disappointed would be an understatement. I've attended speech therapy at various stages of my life, and the only benefit i can say that i've gotten out of it is the awareness and knowledge of the various techniques which can be used when you block. The worst thing about SLP's is that they address stuttering as a learned behavior which can be cured (double underline) if we practice the techniques. Almost every private SLPs want to make money out of it coz they know that we're in desperate look out for a quick fix and can give any amount to achieve that, realistic or not, and they take advantage of this. I'm really shocked to know that the program you've enrolled have risen their price to a whopping 12.5G. Man, this is a felony. Do they promise that they'll cure you as well after attending their program ??

I would want everyone who's a member of this forum and are ignorant about the fact that there is no cure for stuttering, to know that anyone who claims that they have a cure for stuttering are lying. They are nothing less than money snatchers/robbers.

Just for an experience, if you want to go for speech therapy then go to AIISH (all india institute for speech and hearing) located at mysore. They charge a nominal amount of Rs.30. Yes you have aspiring students of speech therapy taking your sessions and you might meet up 3-4 different therapists taking your sessions there but be rest assured that you'll get to know almost everything there is to know about speech therapy there. Its better to spend a nominal amount of Rs.30 there than spending 5G-12G elsewhere.

I've myself wasted a lot of money on speech therapy and i'm telling this from my own experience. Its only you who can make your speech consistent. Fluency should never be the goal instead it should be a by-product of the psychological changes you make in you.

The first step towards achieving that goal is acceptance and non-avoidance. The second step is desensitization. The third step is eliminating your secondaries, if you have any.

Don't feel ashamed/embarrassed when you stutter, develop a thick skin and have the courage to take others reactions whether its +ve or -ve, it doesn't matter. Don't let your self-esteem go down just because you've stumbled upon a word. Develop this habit of forgive and forget, it even applies to your own self not only others. And the first and foremost thing is to learn to say no. Just because you stutter doesn't mean that you should take shit from anybody. It doesn't mean that you're not entitled to put your choices in front. Just because we stutter we have this habit of feeling guilty after saying no to a certain thing. We think that the other guy is doing a favor just by being your friend and you should agree to whatever he says. Well, saying no is your birth right and even you cannot take this right away from you. Don't substitute words, if you feel like stammering the word out then do it. This way you learn to stop avoiding words, accepting your stammer and desensitizing yourself.

I'm attending an on going workshop conducted by TISA and i found it very fruitful. I would suggest everyone especially who know about stuttering to take the initiative & come forward and help their fellow stammers to learn about stammering. In India i've seen, due to ignorance, we ourselves do not know much about stuttering. And since we don't know about stuttering ourselves we take every crap what the fluent people say about us. And we in turn start blaming ourselves for everything. We start hating ourselves for that. If somebody asks why do you stutter ? then we don't have an answer for that. Just because we cannot define our problem the people take advantage of that and start telling you their viewpoints which are always wrong because they don't know shit about stuttering. Sorry for using so many terms which may offend a few but this is how i feel and it makes me go bonkers coz i'm sick and tired of being sick and tired.

I'd urge each and everyone of us to learn to define their stutter. If you say that its all there in the head ourselves and we say that its a learned behavior what do you expect the reaction from general mass. They'll think that stammering is curable, and its the fault of the PWS that he still stammers coz speaking for them is like walking and eating. And they feel that the other guy lacks in confidence or has a complex of sort that is why he has a problem in talking. they'll never realize what we go through inside when we have a block. For heaven's sake please don't give such answers so that others get a chance to point fingers at you.

It has been scientifically proven that stuttering is genetic and it affects 1% of population in every culture. They have same psychological issues, situations, problems in their daily lives. The only difference is in the way we stammer coz we're different individuals. we think differently and we've developed our own strategies to cope up with our stutter, that is why it sounds different but at the core level the problem is same.

Its only us who complicate our stuttering. Stuttering is a by-product of the mis-synchronization of our motor nerves with the different organs involved in producing the speech. In a way its all there in the head but its not our fault, we're built this way. the only thing which we can do is to deal with it by learning the right coping up mechanisms and so that even if we stutter, we stutter the right way. That is why practice is very important. The Psychological factors involved in stuttering makes it look even worse that it actually is so there is this need of a mentality shift or changing the stuttering mindset.

I got this opportunity of talking to John Harrison, and i agree with his hexagon model which makes our speech look more complicated but the point where he dismisses the genetic aspect of stuttering is where i disagree with him.

For me stuttering is basically a neural flaw in our brain and our experience to understand and constructing different coping up mechanisms to deal with it makes it look more complicated. That is why you find stuttering in varying degree in PWS. That's a result of the way they've psychologically programed their brain to respond to everytime they anticipate a block. To put it in simple words, stuttering is a neuropsychological disorder.

I realize that this is quite a big post and i know i've rambled on in few places :o) but i wanted to make a point here. Thanks for reading my post.

MY FIRST TISA-DELHI MEETTING

I and dr kshitiz was trying to meet since long time, finally we met tomorrow in my residence and shared our experience regarding stammering, he told me about his vipassna course, speech therapy, problem due to stammering and how he face them .i told him about my long 12 year battle with my speech from homeopathy to TISA via acupuncture and speech therapy.

We both had taken vipassana so talked lot about it and its effect on stammering and we both agree that vipassana can be helpful for stammers….. But only if one practice it regularly at least for six month.

As a pws i am worried about marriage (means how to tell girl about this and will she accept me with this from her heart)..kshitiz told me his experienced regarding his marriage ...g8t help

We talked about dr sachin ,peerbahi , Mani Maran, fine working of Chennai , Pune chapters and others .......

We both had applied from brahmavidya correspondence course ...........so decided to meet more often to discuss brahmavidya breathing exercise and meditation................

At last, when I was about to post our meeting details, I came not know yesterday was International Stuttering Awareness Day, ISAD

Hurreyyyyyyyy I stared my first tisa delhi meeting on such g8t day….surly god is planning something good for me

ISAD celebrations in Pune

Finally it was our Day (International Stuttering Awareness Day, ISAD) and a Friday too! So Anshul, Devang, JP, Mahesh and Manohar met at Copacabana restaurant at 8 p.m. Since we had a lot of choices for the place to sit, it was difficult for us to make a decision and then Anshul finally decided that all of us will sit in the air conditioned hall. As we settled down, Mahesh also called Bhaskar to join us and bhaskar agreed on the condition that we won't start any of our activity there :-).
As soon as the waiter arrived, we gave him a brief gayan about ISAD and told him that all of us will take more time to order our meals. The Sofas were a bit uncomfortable, so Mahesh and me used our assertive skills and asked the guy to provide some cushions. We were just about to finish our first round of beers when Bhaskar joined us. We had a nice fun filled conversations discussing fun side of stuttering. e.g. Anshul once took an oath as a secretary in his college and he stuttered too, but after the event four girls approached him for friendship :-). I must say all of us have a special bond of friendship where we don't edit anything but just share our feelings direct from heart. After a few rounds of beer, appetizer and a small round of main course meal and lots (around three and half hours to be precise) of chit chatting and fun, we called it a day. Anshul would sure be thinking of a nice excuse on his way back home :-)..I must say people who were not there, missed the fun side of stuttering ;-). Also as we have planned, we will be having such get together, once in a month or two months from here on in Pune.
