Why only I

Generally every stammer thinks that why only he is chosen for this non-cured neurological disorder. God can give me any other disease that others can understand and at least I can tell them what I need. I think the answer is “god knows only we people are capable to bear it”. It means that we have something more than common people. Everyone is not capable to live with it. So why we have to worry ? We are not arrey garry people whom stammering can break. We achieve many great things in our life even we stutter. We slip many times but every time we rise up with new courage. We can say that we lost many opportunities due to our unpleasant way of talk. But if we see at present, many other opportunities and chances are only waiting for us. We have to do only one thing for them-“One good initiative”. We successed or fails, dosn’t matter.

Mastermind success!!

“All misery comes from fear and unsatisfied desire. When we know that we never die, we will have no more fear of death. When we know that we are perfect, we will have no more vain desires. These causes being absent, both there will be no misery--there will be perfect bliss, even while in this body….”  - Said by Swami Vivekananda

It is a only mental block that prevents one from achieving any goal.

Have you heard of “Roger Bannister”? (if NOT, then Read ON!!)

>"He was the first athlete to run the mile in less than four minutes." In doing so, he not only broke the four-minute barrier, but also taught a valuable lesson… Back in the 1950's, the world record - 4 minutes 1.4 seconds - was held by Sweden's Ginder Haegg. The record stood for several years since it was set in 1945. Athletes, experts and the world were convinced that it was impossible to run a mile in less than four minutes. Some even argued that the human body was biologically incapable of running the mile in less than four minutes!!!

And then, on 6th May, 1954, Roger Bannister did the impossible. He broke the four minute barrier, finishing the race in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds. His rival - Charles Landy - had thrice run the mile in less than 4 minutes 2 seconds without breaching the 4 minute mark. The four minute barrier was "like a wall", Landy had said. But guess what? Just 56 days after Bannister's feat, Landy ran the mile in 3 minutes 57.9 seconds. And by 1957, 16 athletes around the world ran the mile in under 4 minutes. The 4 minute mental barrier was truly shattered!

What really happened? Did coaches get smarter and teach the athletes new techniques? Did running shoes get more sophisticated? Did bodies suddenly get stronger? No. The 4 minute barrier it turned out was not a physiological one - just a mental one! As Roger Bannister explained later, it seemed illogical that you could run a mile in 4 minutes and a bit, but not break 4 minutes. His mind refused to accept that barrier. That made all the difference.

Once that mental barrier was broken by Bannister, everyone believed it could be done! And once the belief changed, the rest was easy.

It's important to understand that our achievements in life are limited not by what we can do, but by what we think we can do. More than ability, it's our attitude that makes the difference. As Henry Ford said, "If you think you can, you can. And if you think you can't, you are right".

You will probably find your mind constantly grappling with two competing thoughts: 'I can't!' and 'I can!' How do you ensure the 'I can' wins? How can we break our mental barrier of 'I can't'?

Important
You won't always find a Bannister to break your mental barrier. You need to do it yourself. Once you start feeding the 'I can' thought, you will achieve more than you ever thought was possible!

This is what I believe TISA is promoting .. “Believe in Yourself.. Change the Mental Block… Accept your Speech Disability And C the Wonders

signing off!!

Friendly workplace

Parmanand is a member of Herbertpur SHG. He is very hardworking and he financed his college education by doing sundry jobs. He joined Samagra sometime in 2008. He joined a local hospital as an Accountant in 2010. He is doing M.Com and hopes to do MBA someday. Recently, I saw that he has put two A4 posters developed and translated by TISA on his office notice board. See the picture above.
These small steps raise people's awareness about stammering and make our own intercations more comfortable in the office environment, where we have to spend a lot of time. Yes, the response of the administration- like letting us use the notice board- is an IMPORTANT factor and cant be taken for granted!
PS: These A4 posters are available for free in file section of Yahoo group IPWS.

Tsamina-mina eh eh, Waka waka eh eh !

The world-cup fever is finally over! We in India and people world over enjoyed the biggest event of the most popular sport- The FIFA World Cup. Indeed it’s fun to watch all the soccer giants of the likes of Brazil, Italy, Germany, Argentina and others… Along with the sport, we also enjoyed the hip-hop African flavoured official song “Waka Waka” sung by Shakira. We all enjoyed the song as much as the event itself. But did anybody stop to notice the lyrics of this spirited song?

It has a wonderful and apt message for all PWS. As a result of stammer, we at times go through very bad phases and experiences. It impacts us. And we try to come out of it… and then just as we think that we are in control or recovering from it, it recurs with the ugliest face! We fall again… And then we brood over it. No! Don’t brood over it. When you fall, get up! And if you fall again, get up! This is exactly what the lyrics of FIFA official song conveys…

History has it, that “Tsamina” was a favourite song sung by Mokossa group from Cameroon. The song pays tribute to African Skirmishers (a.k.a tirailleurs) during World War II. “Tsamina-mina” means “Come on…” and “Waka waka” means “Do it…” So next time you see the world cup official song, close your eyes for a while, and listen to what it means…. “Come on do it…. If you fall down, get up, and if you fall down again, Get up….”

Thus goes the lyrics:

You're a good soldier
Choosing your battles
Pick yourself up
And dust yourself off
And back in the saddle

You're on the frontline
Everyone's watching
You know it's serious
We're getting closer
This isn’t over

The pressure is on
You feel it
But you've got it all
Believe it

When you fall get up
Oh oh...
And if you fall get up
Oh oh...

Tsamina mina
Zangalewa
Cuz this is Africa

Tsamina mina eh eh
Waka Waka eh eh

Tsamina mina zangalewa
Anawa aa
This time for Africa

Listen to your god
This is our motto
Your time to shine
Don’t wait in line
Y vamos por Todo

People are raising
Their Expectations
Go on and feed them
This is your moment
No hesitations

Today's your day
I feel it
You paved the way
Believe it

If you get down
Get up Oh oh...
When you get down
Get up eh eh...

Tsamina mina zangalewa
Anawa aa
This time for Africa…

Learning to talk again..

Hi Everyone,
PWS has really grown from what I can see and read. TISA also has made an entrance. I joined PWS on yahoo group as an eighteen year old. I am M- B-, 25 years old from M---. I am working as a content writer in a content writing firm in M-. A lot has happened in the past six to seven years and I would like to share my journey with you all.

During these past six years I have completed my post graduation and also a diploma course in journalism. Don’t get me wrong, I am not bragging about my education. But I want to tell how for a person with very low self esteem and confidence this is a matter of pride. I guess all PWS will agree on this. From making a normal phone call, to answering a query from a stranger - each interaction was a small victory. The transition from being a nobody to believing that I can achieve anything has been good and overwhelming at times. In school I was a shy, reserved child. Even socially handicapped. But everything changed when I started graduation and decided that I will no longer be silent. It began with voluntarily answering questions in class, interacting. And my stint as an NSS volunteer helped me with my social skills.

Previously I refrained from interacting with people but now I actually enjoy it. I have worked in three companies since then and I have gone for several interviews. And I have not stuttered badly in any interview. I don’t know how this happened. I did not go for any classes, nor did any breathing exercises. I feel it was just a lack of confidence. But there are times when I still stutter very badly. When I am in an emotional upheaval or very angry. I realize I have to calm down in such emotional situations. Emotions that have been bottled up since childhood come out in emotional outburst. As a child I could clearly see the impatience on people’s faces while I talked. So, I just stopped explaining what I am feeling or what I am going through. The frustration of keeping quiet for so many years came out through other mediums. Violent temper tantrums, or need for solitude. I now realize that I have to learn to put my feelings into words. It is a gradual process which I am slowly learning. I am learning to speak up about what I feel. It is very hard to actually ‘say’ what is going on in my mind at times because till the age of 21 I did not do that. So, it’s as if I am learning to talk again.

So, the journey continues. By the way I am planning to take up teacher’s training and be a teacher. I believe that since I have got so much out of life, it’s now my turn to give back to life. It’s the best way I can reach out to children in need and not only those who stutter but also others might have some other learning disabilities. I want to tell everyone out there to believe in yourself and not give up hope. Would love to hear from you all.
