Walking on Thin Ice..(wake up call)

I have been a regular visitor of an Ashram near my home. It is headed by a very loving and kind realized Saint. I thought that everyone who came to this ashram must have been enveloped by his love and hospitality. But to be sure- I did ask one of the inmates one day: Has anyone ever been turned out by Swami ji from this ashram?

Bangalore SHG on Aug 26th

Attendance on Aug 26 was overwhelming and record-breaking!

17 PWS along with 5 guests from Landmark, making a total count of 22.

PWS:

Upasana, Hema, Nishil, Biju, Pawan, Rohit, Mayank, Kishen (new), Chandan, Joy, Karthik, Abhinav, Jitu,  Pravin, Anand, Vishal and Myself.

Guests:

Dr Latha and along with her 4 other Co-volunteers. Dr Latha along with 4 co-volunteers had taken some time out of their busy schedule to come and share about landmark.

They are “volunteers” from landmark – they are not paid either to conduct the session nor they do receive any commission when someone enrols for Landmark.

All  volunteers were educated, successful and accomplished in their field. They have done the course and  now spread the word about it so that others can try.

Dr Latha, took charge of the session. She asked us to seat in a semi-Circlular fashion facing her. She was very cordial, gentle and yet very firm in her communication. She asked one by one, to take the centre-stage and introduce themselves. From the word go, she could establish a very good connect with the class. She provided ample time for participants to open-out, she listened to everyone attentively and lightened the atmosphere with some humour. It was a good experience for everyone.
After this, there was an interactive session, asking in what areas, participants were seeking to improve.

The answers ranged from Confidence, Relationships, Work, Family, Money, Peace of mind etc. Again each participant was serially asked to express their views.

After that, brief introduction about the landmark education followed then Dr Latha, inspiringly shared how it Impacted her life.  Then Vishal, Biju and Myself shared our experience about Landmark.

One of the profound statements that she made was  “Our past do not determine our Present, but our Future determines our Present” For eg Our current condition is governed by how we see ourselves in future (Not how we have been in past) She did help us digest that statement and also shared some thought provoking ideas.  We ended the session, with some queries on Landmark. It was another Super Sunday, where we tried to push our boundaries.

Regards
Dinesh.

First impression is NOT last impression,,

A very nice post from Hemant:
One day my younger brother returned from college and told - govt. has recruited such a person as a lecturer, who can not able to speak his own subject name properly. today one lecturer came in class and introduced himself - I will teach you Po.Po.Po.Po.Political science. All students were laughing on him.
I started to think- it will be very hard for stammerer lecturer to teach students as all belong to rural area , not serious about study and lecturer has no practical or sessional marks in his hand in art subject so no fear of lecturer.

After one month, again I asked to my brother - how is your political science lecturer surviving ??
He replied - "that lecturer is getting more respect by students than any other lecturer. Students of other sections also never miss his lecturer".
I surprised & asked - how this happened ?
he replied - "although he stammers but he has very deep knowledge of his subject". In starting, other section students also sit in his class And raised complicate questions before him to make fun of his stuttering. But he never loose heart And answered & convinced all. Now all overwhelmed by his knowledge & respect him.

Passing As Fluent

What stammering can mean to some of us- and how it can generate mental stress over the years.. Here is a very interesting paper from ISAD, from Terry Dartnell:
I have been a popular and successful university teacher for more than thirty years.  I have held fellowships at the University of Otago in New Zealand, the Australian National University in Canberra, and Sussex University in the UK.  I have held senior positions at Adelaide University, Australia and the National University of Singapore, and I am now the Head of Artificial Intelligence at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia.  I have had the privilege of travelling the world to share my research interests with my friends and colleagues.  I have enjoyed teaching, although I have enjoyed some sorts of teaching more than others.  I will come back to this in a moment.

My experiences with Vipassana

Parmendra is back from Vipassana and has submitted a very comprehensive in-depth account. A must read for every one:

What is Vipassana?

The word ‘Vipassana’ means “to see things as they really are.” Vipassana is one of the world’s most ancient techniques of meditation which was rediscovered about 2500 years ago by Gautam Buddha. Here it is very essential to mention that it’s not associated to Buddhism, Hinduism or any other religion.

A Message from Charles Van Riper!!

Friends, this is such a GOOD article from Dr Van Riper (father of stammering therapy in USA) that instead of just giving the link, I am pasting the whole article here. It has got some deep messages for all of us. It also explains the very BASIS of stuttering modification approach, which many of us in TISA have used at some point in life. Brilliant. Read on..

Demosthenes unveiled

Demosthenes was (384-320 BC)  one of the most famous orators of ancient times, and many of his speeches are preserved and studied by students of rhetoric.

Here is the story of his stuggle with his stuttering and eventual success...

Publication of The New Self Help Manual

TISA has received a generous grant of Rs one lac from Mr Raja Poladi. We are planning to publish the self-help manual, so that it can be provided to pws wishing to try self-therapy, by post and by hand during TISA events etc. This decision was based on two facts: Not everyone may have access to internet version and not everyone may be able to have a printout for ready reference. Secondly, even though such self-help material may be available on net, this is the first attempt to combine the best of western scientific knowledge and eastern meditative techniques, with a bearing on stammering and self-help.
We may have a small contribution price of Rs 100 or so, on the book, to recycle the funds for further TISA initiatives..
NB: We need volunteer proof readers. If you are good at written English and can spare a few hours, please leave your id in comments. We expect to complete the publication by the end of September 2012. Expense details will be posted here.

Chandigarh Meeting Report- 12th August

We all PWS's met at Sector 33 park, chandigarh on the evening of 12th August. The SHG meet was really refreshing and mind calming.
We all shared our experiences there with a positive note. There were PWS's also from a local speech
therapy institute who really liked to be a volunteer of TISA and spread the awareness among other PWS's and
common people. I really enjoyed the meet. We had discussion over our past experiences and methods to resolve our problems. JP sir explained all the theory behind and techniques to overcome them. Then Jasbir sir started the phase of relaxation therapies/exercises like deep breathing, meditation, loud reading, voluntary stuttering session with strangers, etc. We really found these helpful as they strike the root cause. After that we had a tea at a nearby shop and talked alot with each other. We missed anupinder sir a lot.
Ishan and Sumit were very nice to me. Looking foreward to meet everybody again soon. :)

Yes, I am suffering from depression

This is one of the finest discoveries of mine in the recent past. I know for some of us it can be a simple thing but believe me going through it, was a difficult thing specially for people like me who are caged in their own projected image. It may be because of the not that impressive image depression has or it also may be because of the image I project to the people around me. How many times we have discussed it in TISA work shops, blogs and our regular SHG meets, "acceptance, the first step to overcome our problems." How many times I have lectured it to my fellows but its always a different ball game when you have to face it yourself, isn't it?

Better late than never, I could able to acknowledge it, fortunately. This is what TISA, attending regular SHG meets, talking about my stammer openly and even just simply acknowledging that I am in a block have taught me. "See directly into the eyes of the problem and accept its existence then you will be in a much better state to find your way to solution." In my case it was attending a 10 day Vipassana session. How taking such small steps in our daily life can be so important in our way to self improvement!

I will write about my experiences with Vipassana in details in my next post.
Till then, live and enjoy every moment of your life. Be happy!

Thanks.

On the occasion of independence day, I would like to congratulate all people associated with TISA, a happy freedom of speech.. Let's make a pledge that we can make ourselves free from all barriers of stuttering. Allowing yourself to stammer is one of d step to free yourself. A feel good factor.

Haklao, Magar Pyaar se
