Chandigarh Comm WS

Kisan Bhawan, Chandigarh
Accounts Shared
Brief Report: Main activities conducted were Stammering Interviews (first among participants, then with strangers) and Mutual videography while phoning. Most participants reported that Interviews with strangers (Rose garden and Sukhna lake) was more challenging and rewarding. But yes, discussions, feedback round and other indoor activities in an AC conference room, were also fun and useful- using a Mic was empowering for many of us.
Organizers were surprised at the high response: participants came from Goa, Maharashtra, MP, Delhi and Uttarakhand. Arrangements: thanks to Jasmeet and Pramod ji, were excellent, affordable and very accessible. Dr Naresh Tejpal distributed trophies and gave his best wishes to participants at the end. BSNL was represented by two senior officers. Anupinder and Hemant must be thanked for their role in making it successful. Abhishek, Rakesh, Dikshit, Dnyaneshwar.. many old faces made the experience FUN. Thanks to all.
The real challenge begins NOW: can you continue these activities and momentum on your own OR with the help of your SHG?

CHANDIGARH SHG MEET # 11 REPORT

Ishan, Dhruv, Varun and myself ( JP ) met at sector 33 park yesterday for the 11th meet of Chandigarh SHG! Ishan and myself were the first ones to reach the venue and since we had sometime before others joined, we started discussing a few things and i recorded Ishan's video while he was talking to me! Soon others joined and we started with laughter session (this is a good way to start with positive energy and happy faces :-). Next we did 15 minute meditation! After that we had a round of introductions where we had to introduce ourselves and at the end had to use a randomly selected sentence from a pool and fill in the blanks! Some of the sentences that came out were -
1. If I could throw caution to the winds and really risk, I would. . . . .

2. I like to imagine I'm the cartoon character _____________ because . . . . .
3. School for me was(is) ________________

After that I introduced pausing which all of us were aware but don't use! Pausing is a wonderful tool to get your breathing right and more importantly gives you time to plan and organize your thoughts. So we did an exercise of question answers where anyone of us could ask a question to anyone else and the other person would have to eat one piece of wafer from a packet that we had and then only answer the question! It can be a bit uncomfortable to take your time and then answer the question but it was worth it! The exercise makes us aware about our right to take our time, we can take 5 - 10 seconds to think about our answer! We laos tried to maintain eye contact whenever we spoke.

Next was Ishan's prepared speech. He talked about his journey as a child and a teenager who stammers! It was an honest talk direct from his heart and he communicated in an excellent manner! I again recorded his speech.

Next we moved to the tea stall to have a hot piece of bread pakoda and tea! Chai wala inquired about Mr Jasbir. (Actually Mr Jasbir couldn't come as he was not aware about the meet! And surely all of us including chaiwala, missed him for his humour and b-b-bouncing!) Next we reviewed Ishan's video and did some general discussions on this method of recording your videos, reviewing them, cataloging you stammer and then trying to reproduce your own stammer voluntarily and how it helps to work on the seconday behaviour and a lot of other things! Since the recorded files took some time to get transferred from my phone to Ishan's phone, both of us went for a long walk and discussed a few things going on in both of our lives!

P.S. Dhruv was on his mission to do voluntary stuttering 70 times and he will write a separate post about his experiences

Toastmasters - Another side!!

Hi everyone, I attended Chandigarh toastmasters (TM) club meet yesterday as a guest. I was really impressed by some of the speakers and not so impressed by some of them! To my pleasant surprise I was chosen to speak on a table topic and I am so glad that it happened as it save me around Rs 3500 and a lot of agony and pain in future!

Actually while speaking on the given topic I became aware about what I knew already - WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GOOD COMMUNICATOR. And its NOT fluency! One of the most important thing to be a good communicator is clarity of thoughts. Now clarity of thoughts come from reading, writing and sharing/discussing, then more reading, more writing and more discussing and then doing it more and more (I want to write more and more a hundred times :-). So toastmaster may help you ONLY IF you have got this basic thing - clarity of thoughts and a lot of things to speak about i.e. knowledge.

In Toastmasters the language for communication is English which is very obvious as the group started in west. So people like me who don't have English as their first language (and are really poor at English :-), toastmasters is not really the place to be! Why would you want to stand there for 5 minutes per week with your EMPTY HEAD and only say umh, aaaa (By the way standing silently in front of a large audience for 5 minutes can very therapeutic..But you don't need to pay for it in country of 1.2 billion people :-)..

Some of us just fall for it by listening to some good speakers in TM without realizing that why they are good speakers! I would rather go and work as a volunteer for any NGO on every saturday and talk to people there only in English and improve on my communication in English. Also It would be better if I buy books worth Rs 3500 and then spend 1800 on books every six months (these are toastmasters fees) so that I read more and more. Also start my own blog and do such more meaningful things for me rather than just join the herd mentality!

P.S. Do go to toastmasters a few times as guests to get adrenaline rush and also to learn time management skills. These guys had their eye on the watch through out the meeting!! Even though i didn't do well in my table topic speech, I was really surprised to see how accepting i was of myself as a human being and how easily i was able to concentrate on the NOW in next moment!

CHANDIGARH SHG MEET # 10 REPORT

Ishan, Jasbir ji and myself met at our regular meeting place (sector 33 park) on 6th Feb 2011. It was my chance to coordinate the meeting. We started with laughter session and a nice 15 minute meditation and then I introduced bouncing (in detail) to the group. We used it in our next activity where we started by telling our name, our profession, our best friend's name, colour of our shirt, number of pockets in our trousers etc by varying the number of bounces from 2 to 9! The basic idea was not to speak sentences but just one word, which makes it easier to focus on the technique. Next was the round of table topics where all of had to speak on a given topic for 3 minutes. Then came the surprise and challenge of the day - face game! In this each person would give one emotion, feeling (can even give a situation and person will know how one feels if hes in that situation) and the other person would have to use his facial expressions to show that feeling ( link ) . One of the surprise was feeling of love! (Just stand in front of a mirror and try this :-)..The idea behind this activity was to make us aware that their are a lot of non verbal communication also that goes on between people. Also it was an activity to challenge all of us! Next all of us spoke on self respect for 2 minutes. We ended with a round of tea with a-again a round of voluntary stammering and bouncing with the chai wala (This guy may be looking for a new place by now! From next time we will spare him and find some other bakara :-)

As planned the next regular meeting will be on 20th Feb 2010 (I will post the venue and Agenda on blog on 17th Feb). For the weekends when their is no formal meet, we plan to meet over a cup of coffee and a round of snacks. This weeks casual meet will be on Saturday evening in sector - 17 Plaza (Ishan please post the details soon)! Also Mr Jasbir is giving his fourth project speech in toastmasters this Saturday. Please be there! (Sir please post the venue and timings)

Chandigarh SHG Meet - 30 Jan 2011

Dhruv, Mr Jasbir and myself met at Sector 33 park yesterday for our weekly meets after a long time! Jasbir ji requested me to share my experiences at Chennai workshop, which i did :)..We started with usual laughter session and this is something really good that I have learned from the SHG...I would recommend all the SHGs to start this way. It brings a great postive energy right at the start. Next we did a brief round of breathing exercises and meditation.Mr Jasbir shared a nice post from http://stutteringhub.com/ about doing the right thing and not the things that we feel we can do easily. (Sir, please share the link). We discussed ways to spread good word about Chandigarh SHG..And it was decided to invite a newspaper reporter to one of our meets (I am the owner for this task :-). Also it was decided to make the meetings once a fortnight and to put up an agenda every thursday about the upcoming meet. Also we decided to shift the meetings to morning as some of us felt that that way we can spend Sunday evenings with our families and may also increase the attendance. Next we had a round of table topics where Mr Dhruv spoke on - Mahatma Gandhi, JP on - "what India has and what needs to be done further to become a developed country" and Mr Jasbir spoke on "future prospects of SHGs".
I am also assigned the task for finding a hall where we can meet..We dispersed after having a nice Tea and a good round of bouncing and voluntary stuttering with chai wala.

So from next week Chandigarh SHG will be meeting once a fortnight on Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

P.S. - All three of us also made a voluntary contribution of Rs 100 to take care of snacks and drinks for every meet and also for other expenses involved in running a SHG. We plan to do this every month! and the expenses details and accounts will be put up on TISA's website regularly!

BEST SPEAKER AWARD FOR 2ND PROJECT IN CHANDIGARH TOASTMASTERS CLUB

On 07.08.2010 I gave my second speech in Toastmaster club. My topic was corruption , its origin , key players in Indian society, reasons why our society encourages corruption and how we can jointly fight the parasite of corruption making India corruption free. My entire speech of 6.5 minutes went smoothly very well without any block. Though as usual before beginning I was a bit tense and nervous . Before starting I had been doing deep breathing exercise continuously, which really worked. I tried to involve the audience in my talk and whenever there was a pause I had been taking deep breathe. I had motivated Mr. Ishan a PWS and student of Panjab Engineering College to attend the meet and watch my presentation. I am grateful to Mr. Ishan for acceding to my request.

At the end it was a pleasant surprise for me when I was chosen the best speaker of the day. I feel sorry for not being able to upload my speech. Though I had tried recording but due to technical reasons it could not be recorded properly. At the end I realized that throughout the talk I was very much involved with contents of my speech and the thought process, not leaving any room for thought of any block. Moreover the topic was close to my heart. The feeling of love also helped. Evaluators comment was that I was a bit fast. I will consciously try to slow down in my next speech.

I request ALL to join the toastmaster clubs in their respective areas to shed the fear associated with speaking. Moreover it is keeping me busy all the time thinking about the preparation and doing better next time.

Regards,

Jasbir sandhu, Chandigarh.

MY ICE BREAKING SPEECH AT TOASTMASTER CHANDIGARH

On 23.07.2010 at 3.45 pm I broke the ice and delivered my first speech at Toastmaster
club Chandigarh. I am grateful to Dr. Sachin and Mr. Manohar from Pune for giving me
strength & courage to disclose before audience that I am a stutterer, which otherwise I
would not have disclosed. I started with the following words:
“ Hi, I am jasbir a young man in 50s trying to improve my speech, which has been giving
me slips since childhood because of stuttering.”
The moment I spoke the above lines I felt so relieved and my entire presentation of 6-7
minutes went on with full confidence without a single block. I am also thankful to Mr.
Paramjeet Singh a PWS from Chandigarh who on my request kindly spared time to attend
the Toastmaster meet as a guest and see my presentation.
I further felt elevated when the evaluator gave comment that he liked my honesty and
suggested only to slow down the speed a bit in future projects.
I am preparing for my second project.
Friends nothing happens unless first you dream and keep telling yourself:
“I can do this”.
“I have done it many times before and its not a big deal.”
Jasbir sandhu, Chandigarh.

ACCEPTANCE- THE FIRST STEP

Last Friday a PWS Mr. Rakesh (name changed on request), met me and discussed the problem in detail. He is 22 years old, an IT professional & having this problem since childhood. After discussion I realized that he is yet to accept this issue from heart. Because when I asked him whether I may put his name on TISA site while narrating the discussion. He politely requested not do this from the time being.

We discussed the 3 mistakes that lead to stammering viz.

  1. Hasty or fast speech,
  2. Distorted or no breathing while talking,
  3. Talking in excitement.
I advised to overcome the above habits by doing the following:
  1. Home practice- speaking slowly, prolonging the words with mouth open voice loud for at least 30 minutes daily,
  2. Speaking standing in front of a mirror to observe the secondary habits in order to eliminate it,
  3. Inhale normally. Just when about to speak , blow out a little puff of air,
  4. Pause for 2 seconds before starting to speak,
  5. Speak slowly,
  6. Maintain eye contact.
  7. Start doing voluntary stuttering . To start, do it with the rikshaw pullers & subji wallas in mandis.

He is doing the above and as per the feedback received He is improving and is happy.

But again I told him that TOTAL ACCEPTANCE FROM HEART IS THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS GETTING RID OF THE PROBLEM.

(JASBIR SANDHU)

My Thoughts

My Thoughts regarding stammering :Date :1st July,2010
I have stammering problem from the childhood. Yesterday evening I met Mr. Jasbir Singh Sandhu (very senior officer in the central Govt. department) who was there to help others. I have come to know about Mr. Sandhu from the internet site www.stammer.in . Mr. Jasbir Singh told me that he also had this problem. But to my astonishment I have not noticed even single instance of stammer in our long talk of more then one and half hour .I think that the reason that he is working on the problem constantly to overcome is successful. We discussed openly about the problem. The meeting and discussing of the problem openly was very distressing .We openly discussed our incidents in our school and college life. Some of the points we discussed

• At one point of the time the problem was very severe. It was even obstructing our normal way of life. But when the person decides to work on it to overcome the handicap, that moment is the starting point for the improvement. Then there are different defense mechanisms to overcome the problem like
-not speaking at all.
-speaking bare minimum.
-using alternate words to express your thoughts.
-avoid the difficult words.
-using hand in front of your mouth when facing the problem.

• But with all these defense mechanisms the problem will never go but will be permanent feature of the personality. So why not use the defense mechanism which will help in having more control on our speech and subsequently overcoming the problem itself. The defense mechanism is Deep Breathing. Most often when you are talking have a deep breath and then exhale little bit before speaking gently.

• Now I am writing about my problem and fears:
I often get stuck on some words like:
Three, Two ,Hallo, Talvara, Tarun, Sherry ,tanveen,

Today I Have also visited PGI for speech Therapy. And the crux of the meeting with the team of speech therapist was:
-If problem is there, then we have to face it and challenge it. Then only we can overcome the fear of some words in our mind.
The speech therapist advised me to take the deep breath and exhale little bit before speaking gently. I will try to practice this technique then I will share my experience with all of you. Now a days I am practicing the technique for difficult words for me like Hello .I say a Hallo. This is helping me.

Paramjit

(Congratulations, Paramjit. By sharing openly, our problems become half. By helping ourselves, the other half is taken care of. Welcome to TISA family!)
