A MORNING WITH A BLISS

Hi all, I am Mansi, I shifted to Bangalore one year back at Indian institute of Science. I am just wrapping up my PhD, which took 5 years to complete. Besides enjoying my PhD, I love to cook, sing, watching sci-fi movies and series (hooked onto Fringe these days, LOL).  I have stammering since childhood, I did face many obstacles in day-to day life since then, including, talking to shopkeepers, talking on phone, giving seminars, interviews and vivas. I joined speech therapy few years back which help

ed me a lot with stuttering, but again like everyone I also faced relapse some time back. I have suffered with an extremely low self esteem since long because of continues failures, which made me join TISA 2 months back. Since then I happen to attend only four SHG meetings. So today I am going give a crisp gist of my fourth SHG meeting at Bangalore (PICS attached), which was awesome!!!!

A MORNING WITH A BLISS.  A total of 18 people attended the meeting at CUBBON PARK from 10am to 1pm. The members included me, Dinesh, Naman Rohit, Siddharth, Jayanth, Sairam, Ssrinivas, Anand, Subhash, Pragna, Anshuman, Rohit, Avnish, Raman, Tapan, Reuben, Harikrishna and Pramod. The meeting started with an introduction , followed by prepared speech and impromptu speech and ended with a discussion on secondary symptoms of stammering. Everyone INTRODUCED themselves as usual. I was glad to see few NEW MEMBERS in the meeting- named Tapan, Srinivas, Pragna, Subhash, and Raman. This was followed by Prepared speeches, which was adapted from TOASTMASTERS  ICE BREAKER SPEECH PROJECT,  wherein one is supposed to give a small introduction and a small story related to their lives. Me, Reuben, Anshuman, Pramod and Dinesh gave prepared speech. Starting with the humor,  i spoke about  weird & funny incidences of me and my twin sister. Reuben spoke about his life and career progression. Pramod inspired us with detailed speech about volunteering in NGOs and its good effects on our lives. And Dinesh ended the speech with a sweet little story about his wedding. At the end, we all discussed about the types of SECONDARY SYMPTOMS and their pros and cons in a stammerer's life. Well i believe that secondary symptoms only make our stammering worse. If we try to identify our secondary symptoms and make a point to avoid them then we can reengineer our minds to BLOCK THE BLOCK.

With these quotes in mind (and on my wall too!)- " IF WE FACE OUR PROBLEMS AND RESPOND TO THEM POSITIVELY, AND REFUSE TO GIVE IN TO PANIC, BITTERNESS, OR SELF PITY, THESE ADVERSE SITUATIONS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY COULD BURY US, HAVE WITHIN THEM THE VERY REAL POTENTIAL TO MAKE US UNSHAKEABLE", i will surely attend next SHG meeting, with a hope to move one more step towards my goals.

And i would also like to all my friends at SHG BANGALORE for making the meetings non scary (otherwise speaking is scary for me, LOL) and full of fun .

Great.
It's indeed a Bliss to be in a company of 18 with a common purpose.
Remember coming together is the first step on the path of recovery.
Keep moving on the path Dr. Mansi.
Congratulations Self Help Group Bangalore.

Superb Article. All details covered in simple write up. This is a quality of a good writer. I like your idea of BLOCK the BLOCK !

Moreover, idea of participating in NGO activities is very good in terms of meeting new people and working for a noble cause!I think this should a part of SHG's meetings as well.
