TISA National Conference DAY 2 Report

Day 2 started with a quick recap of day 1 activities where randomly people got to share activities briefly.

Then it was a detailed talk on VIPASSANA meditation technique by Mr.Jasbir Singh (Founding member of Chandigarh SHG).

It was followed by a couple of mini presentations by Mr. Manimaran (founding member of Chennai SHG and the new TISA coordinator), Mr. Raja poladi (founding member of Hyderabad SHG), Mr. Amit Kushwaha (Editor of Samvad, the hindi magazine of TISA), Mr. Tarak Goradia (Core team member of TISA)

There were open mike sessions in between to make sure that everyone got a chance to speak and many comparatively older TISA members make it sure that all the NEW comers should get a chance to speak at least once in front of the whole audience.

After lunch, it was the most exciting, still breath taking activity; Metro train activity.About half of the participants went for this activity in a group of 6-7 people where they boarded metro train and talk to the passengers about TISA,stammering and tried to know their opinions about stammering.

Undoubtedly it was adjudged as the best activity of the day as many participants felt very light and satisfied after doing this PUBLIC SPEAKING activity.

We wrapped off the activity by a quick energizer where we test our stamina as well as ability to focus on different things at a time.

guhar ji, aapne correct decision liya ki Pahle din hi chale gye. Dusre din ek srdar ji 30minute tk english me bole, Jis ka stammering se Koi lena dena Nahi tha, kisi ne red signal Nahi dikhaya aur main 3 din me Pahli bar bolne utha to 3-4 minute me red signal dikha diya. It was wasting money and time for me. Very much partiality .
Mujhe pta h TISA blog ka maalik is comment ko display Nahi karega.

Dear Anonymous- Thank you for your very useful feedback! Now, let us stop here and state the lesson learned:
1. In conferences (national or regional)- local language must be given precedence as the language of facilitation and presentations. If need be- we should utilise translators or give the photostat translation in advance.. We must try to make proceedings understandable by all participants.
2. Formal presentations should be allowed only when, theme and content has been approved in advance by the organisers. Obviously, the content must deal with stammering and self help. For other topics, there are other venues and platforms.
3. This was emphasised in agenda and is so important that I repeat it again and I will keep on repeating till I die: Give chance to young pws! TISA NC is not a platform to prove that "I am a recovered pws and I can speak in public very well". Toastmaster is a much better environment to do that.

Let us have next event much better organised by LISTENING to organisers and cooperating with them. I hope Mani will agree with these suggestions.

I am reposting this comment from another post, just to tell you that we WELCOME dissent and criticism- the only way to GROW:

I take this opportunity to thank all the TISA members for selecting me as National coordinator. I will try my level best to take TISA further to the new height like those of the previous coordinators Dr.Sachin & JP. For this, I need all your support.

To avoid language problem as Mr.Torek suggested, we will have a regional or zonal conferences once in 3 months so as to cover all the 4 zones in a year. In these zonal conference, the predominant languages in those regions can be extensively used.

We will hold NC once in a year on rotational basis. In NCs participants are free to talk in any language they like or feel comfortable. Even we can have a translator.

As NCs were already held in South and North, it is time for East or West to hold the next one.

These are my plans and lot of time is available. I leave the above suggestions to all the TISA members for their comments.

Thanks Mani; Yes, regional conferences. More attention to planning language issues in advance; more respect to time keepers and requests from organisers. Collectively we can achieve impossible-but not without some discipline.
Let us move on! and be wiser!

thanks anonymous for giving feedback. It will help us to improve TISA. But dear anonymous , TISA teaches us ACCEPTANCE. So apply acceptance for this experience also.

I also have 2 questions For TISA core team-
1. First day during national conference, one core team member & facilitator J.P. Sunda Fixed some ground rule, i.e. "You are NOT free to give feedback or suggestions". But on last day, when I was on mike, another core member ,Mr. Tarak interrupted me & started to give feedback & suggestions.
Means one member of core team was making ground rule & another was breaking ground rule.
was rule different for person to person??
.
.
2. In national conference, TISA always remains eager to welcome SLP, If NON-INDIAN. But If some indian SLP shows willingness to join in any TISA activity, TISA strongly refuses him.
even for this, so many PWS objected as if somebody is ready to come and give his free service , why TISA resisting ?

I think Hemant raised valid points and thanks to him. We will keep it in mind for the future events. But to my personal opinion, as long as the advise is accepted by the individual, there is no harm in it. During group discussion, I also gave advise to one member (who was having eye contact to one pws throughout his speech)to have eye contact with all the group members and he had realised his mistake. If we are very strict,we cannot learn anything. You have raised a valid point on SLP, which we will look into it.

Dear Hemant ji,

First of all, let me apologize for point number 1. I have noted it down.

For point number 2, I would like to correct you - There was an Indian SLP (Vijay) present at this event. Actually we had invited even one more but he cancelled at the last moment. In the past also we have invited SLPs many times - At Coorg we had two Indian and on Srilankan SLP. Whenever we find someone aligned to the idea of Self Help, we do invite them. On another note, TISA events are more about self help and the person who stammers and not about professional SLPs.

Thankyou so much for the two great points!! I can see a lot of critical feedback from participants this year, which is really good for all of us

I agree with Sachin that TISA NC is not a platform for recovered PWS to show that they can deliver a public speech. At the same time, TISA NC is also not a platform for SLPs to market their "therapy" to the prospective "clients". Any SLP doing private practice will have his/her axe to grind and TISA should be wary of this. There are other avenues available for them.

J.P. Ji
You should not apologies for point no.1 (ground rule) as it is only point, on which TISA is running. Only this point made PWS comfortable & transparent during TISA activities. PWS can stammer openly in TISA events. If this point will be diluted - what difference will remain between outer world & TISA family. as Whole outer world is eager to give suggestions/feedbacks to PWS.
please make this rule more "STRICT".
But.....
Before start of TISA events, facilitator can announce "please don't interrupt to give suggestion, if somebody is speaking." &
if somebody wants/needs suggestions/feedback, can contact to X/Y persons personally"

As Dr. Sachin said -“This
Self is to be realized through self-effort!”
so better to share personal experience , instead of suggesting others. let PWS search his own way.

Great to be a part of TISA.

Not only does it have substance to share, emphasizes on Self-Help....but is so so mature to have the sagacity to take in criticism. How many organizations let alone individuals have the maturity to digest it!!

Thank you TISA. I will strive to play my part well as a member of TISA.

Best Wishes all,
Kushal.
