Some speech therapist recommend to PWS -"Inhale from mouth instead of nose".
even i was also recommended it by a speech therapist, who proclaimed himself ex-stammerer, but he still stammers . I did it for many years (and i was not useful in stammering also). It is wrong habit of breathing, even harmful for health .
as many of diseases to which civilized man is subjected, are caused by mouth breathing as by mouth breathing, we are bypassing the organs which are protective to dust, impurities, germs and cold air .
if one inhale by Nose, these impurities are stopped and retained by sieves and mucous membrane of nostrils and thrown out by sneezing. But by Mouth breathing, these impurities directly reach in lungs without filtration, cold air harm vocal cords. so Nostril breathing is better then mouth breathing.
in nostril breathing also , people inhale 3 types
1. elevating ribs and raising collar bone and shoulders (more labor, but less air inhales by this)
2. by expanding chest (middle breath)
3. Diaphragmatic breathing or abdominal breathing by expanding by stomach (best as per medical science)
but Yogi complete breathing (Bhastrika Pranayam) include all merits of above 3 breathing exercises. it strengthen whole respiratory apparatus, every parts of lung, every air cell & diaphragm. after 1-2 month practise of Bhastrika Pranayam, diaphragmatic breathing automaticaly start in daily routine if mouth closed.
As per oriental esoteric breath science, air contains oxygen and Prana (energy). oxygen in the air is appropriated by the the blood. Oxygenated blood is carried to all parts of the circulatory system, building up and replenishing. Prana in the air is appropriated by the nervous system, carried to all parts of the nervous system, adding strength and vitality. 75 to 80 percent of our lives is NOT under our control -blood circulation, hearh beating, food digestion etc. Breath is the only nutrition of our body which we can bring under our control and it is the most important nutrition which can link body, mind and soul.

As per my understanding, inhaling should be through nostrils only. Exhaling may be either thro nostril or thro mouth. And abdominal breathing is always the best.
Thanks Hemant. Good post.
@ Manimaran sir,
You are right . Diaphragm breathing is best. during October 2012 communication workshop, sachin sir shown demo of it. I also practised it by putting books, later bricks on stomach. But I was not able to make it habit. It was not happening full day automatically , unconsciously. But after practising Bhastrika Pranayam just for 5-6 minutes during morning exercise (in 1-1 or 2-2 minute set), now diaphragm breathing is happening UNCONSCIOUSLY whole day.
As per my experience , it is due to activation and stimulation of whole respiratory apparatus from nostrils to diaphragm by Pranayam.
Really very interesting. Can you show it practically at forthcoming NC about Bhastrika Pranayam?. Sorry, I could not read your name as I don't know Hindi. Your good name Pl?
@manimaran sir,
ok i'll show it at NC. video clips of Bhastrika pranayam available on youtube. I also given link with this post. Nowadays Baba Ramdev's pranayams are famous all over world. if you will go in any park in morning, you will get someone, who is doing pranayam. just ask him, he will show.
