We met again today at 6 pm at YWCA. About 30 people. Discussions lasted for about 3 hours. At times, we had to request people to curtail their comments. Everyone was given a chance to share their thoughts. We also had to frequently emphasise that self-acceptance is more important and effective in the long run- rather than desperately looking for "cure" in the short term. sachin shared a small inspirational video with participants about an individual with no limbs (Phocomelia). The message was- never give up and keep trying. Mr Manimaran very ably facilitated the meeting.
Celebration of our diversity! Better attitudes through knowledge! A community dedicated to self-help.

In the Shadow of Gandhi..

Just now we have finished a two hour brain storming session about future course of action and division of work among the core team members. Hassanand, Shivasubramanian, Mani and Vishal represent the core team. They bring various skills, experience and resources to the group. Most social movements start in an spontaneous and 'informal' way but at some point they have to stop, take stock and get organised. Chennai chapter too has enetered this phase of evolution.
For example we discussed such questions:
1. What do we do, when all these inquirers come for the SHG meeting?
2. How to offer hope to young PWS and still be honest?
3. How to deal with media and how to use it to promote our cause?
4. How to reach out to common people who dont access internet but can read Tamil?
5. How to ensure TISA focus on long term social / attitudinal change rather than just selling "two weeks" stammering cure camps?
6. How to attract resources- human and other, to meet the growing future needs?
7. How to encourage development of SHGs in other regions of Tamilnadu?
It was a very fruitful meeting, which helped us to concretise our thoughts. The group has alreday booked a conveneient central venue for the weekly meetings till March end.
Last few days: Mani took sachin to Chenai Sewerage treatment plan- the modern technolgy which converts household sewer darinage back to safe water, which can be released into some pond or river. Totally energy efficient. The sludge generates methane, which drives the motors, which in turn, power the filtration ponds and other operations.
The biggest bus stand, which looked more like some airport.. Vegetable market...
Then, Dr Anupam came and spent some time with sachin. Anupam has a lot of insider perspective on therapy, self help, role of family and colleagues. He immensely enjoyed "Unspeakable" and "Courage to Speak". By the way, everyone in the audience was inspired by his courage to speak on 24th Jan, in the public meeting, inspite of the difficulties, which is well known to us. He is a very interesting person and a bright Opthalmologist-to-be.
Couple of other children and young men, visited sachin at YWCA. We are counseling them and requesting them to attend the weekly meetings organised by the Chennai chapter.
Above is the picture of the Gandhi statue, where five students of Mr Bala Subramanian, used to meet and conduct self help group, in 2001. Mani recalled those early days, on Marina beach. Then, in 2004, the members dispersed for some or other reason. Now, again in 2009, an initiative has started.
If Gandhi is remembered a thousand years later, I guess, it will be for his insistence on truth. And that, I think, should remain the central message of our SHG: If it hurts, let us say so- and do something about it- for the common good.
Surat SHG Meeting
- TISA should develop standard a] presentation, b] article and c] brochure for circulation/dissemination. Presentation can be used by any TISA PWS for school teachers, article can be posted in any newspaper, magazine or internet with TISA banner and brochure can be shared with any interested party. This is mainly because all are not conversant with internet in India and may not visit our blog
- We need to rop in more pws in the SHG. We have been trying by Orkut etc. but we should be approaching schools (for cws) and speech therapist for pws.
Mumbai PWS are planning to arrange a meeting on 1st February and Akash will attend it.

The Day After!!

In many ways, 25th Jan was "the day after" for me! I remember having said to Mani at one point- Dont worry, if no one comes, I will still come and two of us will practice speaking to the waves on Marina beach! But I was worried. And, then everything went off so well and smoothly.. including my talk, with Sivasubramanian's efficient translation (English to Tamil)..
So, we decided to hit the beach next morning. Hassanand, BK and myself. The sea reflected my own state of mind in the rising sun- calm, beautiful and full of possibilities. While BK and Hassanand discussed the finer issues of speech and related emotions, I 'broke out' in a jog along the beach..
Then, later during the day a young medical practitioner came with his brother; We talked for about an hour and then, I told him to regularly attend the local SHG weekly meets.
A message from Mani
The TISA-Chennai chapter was formally inaugurated on 24th Jan 2009. 50 pws
attended and the total strength of the hall is more than 60. A very good
response and no one had expected this much. I take this opportunity to thank all the members of this group who have supported us constantly, I also thank all the members of the Chennai chapter especially to Sivasubramanian, Hassanand and Vishal as without their support, this meeting would not have succeed at all. I also thank Mr.Balasubramaniam (my guru) who came from Coimbatore on my personal request. Last but not the least, my thanks to Dr.Sachin who handled the gathering well with his prompt and spontaneous replies.
Here I would like to share about how to get our news published in the news papers / media so that others may also benefit from our ex[experience. Till 18th Jan, the Chennai chapter was having 10 members only. Also, there was no guarantee that all the members will attend the 24th Jan meet. There was every possibility of the general (non-stammering) audience strength becoming more than the strength of pws!!
On 19 th morning myself (Mani) and Sivasubramanian decided to go to press offices in person. We went to 2 Tamil daily, 2 English daily and 1 Tamil Weekly. I mentioned about my official position & our intentions for the meet. On 20th Jan, 2 Tamil daily & 1 English daily, and on 21st Jan, 1 English daily published our news - but without any contact details at all :-((
Only one Tamil daily (Dinathanthi) published my mobile number with the
meeting venue, date and time. Everything then changed overnight. I received
close to 50 calls. There would have been no space in the hall if all these callers had actually turned up!
This Tamil daily is more than 75 years old and it is mostly read by lower socio-economic strata. The majority pws attending the meeting are either from middle or lower middle income groups. I could not express my feelings in words about their faith in us. In every conversation, they would say "we will follow in future whatever you people tell us- as you only have bothered to call us; and the way
you conducted the proceedings of the meeting, giving us full chance to share our feelings, concerns and problems- we have full faith in your group".
Now we have got about 20 students(pws) name with us. We are planning to
conduct a summer camp (After examinations) for them.Suggestions are welcome.
A post script:
Please read the following conversation on 25th(9AM) between myself and S (a pws) to under stand the impact of the above meeting on PWS.
"Sir, after attending yesterday's meeting, I am now able to speak better overBye now from Chennai
phone & hopefully get out of this problem sooner"
"OK S--, fine. But you are going to land in another problem"
"What Sir? !"
"You may have to pay more phone bill !"
"That's not a problem for me, sir. After speaking well, I will earn more !"
Regards,
V. Manimaran

Post-Post-script: This is sachin- Yes, I too thank aaalllll of you- especially Shivasubramanian for excellent translations on the go- without which I owuld have been so helpless... Hassanand, Vishal and Mani above all, for organising everything so well. Also for giving me a chance to meet his Guru (Mr Bala)- The service he has done to a large number of young PWS much before TISA came into existence, will remain an inspiration for all of us.. May God bless all of you!
Chennai- 3rd post
Delhi takes off!
| After dilly-dallying for long, the Delhi team finally decided to meet on 24th January. We started with a pool of about 15 people. I talked to each one of the group, asking them to come to the team; but this being a long week-end many people were traveling out of Delhi and in the end we had three confirmations for the meeting. On 4th, I met Dr. K and A in the Central Park, Connaught Place. We began the meeting by introducing each other; but since for stutterers that in itself is a big task, we took quite long in that :-) K works in Lady Harding Medical College and it turned out we have a few common friends. Afterwards we shared with other, the various therapies we have practiced, it's effects on us, our experiences etc. The conclusion we agreed upon was that we all are almost fluent when we are practicing our brands of speech therapy, the real challenge lies in bringing that technique in real life conversations. And here we thought, a self-help group can help a lot. We can meet each other and talk using our techniques without the other person thinking of us as freaks. We have decided to meet every Saturday for the beginning and bringing more members in, so that we can organize more locally centered groups. I will update about the next meeting, next Sunday. Cheers Nitin |

Chennai Meet- 2nd post

Here are some more pictures.. during and after the meeting. YWCA is very close to Egmore - in the heart of Chennai but quiet, as it stands on its own sprawling green grounds. A perfect place to hold a meet. It will be difficult to share the upshot of the public meeting in a few words. But here are some strands of discussions:
1. Changing one's mindset can ensure a deep and lasting change.
2. Accepting oneself with our stammer is an important first step.
3. Spiritual path to healing is a valid and effective path to wholeness and health.
4. Adult PWS must work, if not for themselves, for the sake of younger PWS, by providing them more information, support and a safe atmosphere in which they could discuss their problems and issues.
5. Stammering should be de-linked from shame, guilt etc. Stammerer needs therapy- yes, but so does the society at large. Society too needs to change- needs to become more accepting of the diversity. This last should be the central focus of TISA..
6. Whether Stammering can be 'cured' or not? No simple answers. More important than this question is- can PWS be cured of the shame and fear of stammering? Answer is a definite 'yes'.
We have met some very interesting and 'powerful' people- like Dr Anupam. We hope to keep in touch with them and work with them, to promote understanding and acceptance for a condition which is scarcely understood even by the medical profession.
As we met in Chennai, a similar group is taking shape in Delhi. Many participants have some ideas about Delhi- the next big get together- God willing!
Chennai Meet- part 1

We had a very nice meeting at YWCA, International Guest house; It extended beyond lunch, till five pm. In the morning session, Mr Balakrishnan, Mr Manimaran, Mr Vishal Dadha, Mr Shivasubramanian, Mr Hassanand, Dr B K Singh and Sachin and others shared their thoughts. A 10 minute video (Sssstutter) was screened. Total attendance exceeded organisers' exepectations - about 60+ people participated.
Contact details of the participants have been taken down and they will be invited to participate in the self help group meetings hence forth. In the afternoon session, particiapnts were encouraged to grab the microphone and share their thoughts and concerbs. Family members and some girls too shared their concerns and issues.
This is just an early report. We will be sharing more over next few days. Keep watching.

News from Chennai
Kanniappan, Arunachalam, Ganapathy (SLP) and Manimaran. This time the meeting was
held in a mini conference hall of YWCA where 25 can be easily accommodated.
Every one spoke for about 15 min about their previous experiences and it was
very lively session. Then Manimaran told about slow reading technique which is very useful
for calming mind (of anybody) and which is given below for the benefit of others.
"Read a book in such a way that 3 sec pause have to be made between , &Finally the SLP spoke for about 15 min and gave valuable suggestions.
.(important thing is it should be deliberate and conscious one) for about 15 min
a day."
Arrangements for the meet on 24th Jan are in full swing. Everyone is welcome.
Stuttering Communes?
Many people do that all the time- by renting a house in a particular quarter of the city, or by joining some housing colony or some kind of group based on ethnic, communal, linguistic or other bases. Imagine the joy of joining a Durga Puja committee in New York? Or running into a Hindi speaking guy in Jasper, Canada, as I did some years ago?
What if, PWS could live in communes? In special neighborhoods? Who loses? Who gains? For many PWS finding acceptance is more important than producing smooth speech. Sometime back I was reading an article about how in 18th (or 19th?) century, in the south of France, in vineyards, many deaf people (probably not severely so) were working as farm hands. They had their sign language and a kind of sub-culture, where in deafness was a non-issue; where finding work and mate was not difficult after all. This could be an advantage for the people who stammer, if something like this were to happen in our case. But society will certainly lose out yet one more opportunity to come to grips with diversity existing in its bosom. And what do we do if a non-stammering member of the family, does not want to relocate?
A good compromise will be self help groups, where PWS and CWS can drop in from time to time and feel at home; where there is no pressure to change the way I speak and feel. Let us know what you think. (Real Estate agents may contact only if they stammer!).

social problem, social solution
If you are determined to change the way you speak, try to access an intensive group speech therapy course; research shows that this seems to be the most effective way of being able to change your speech. Here is the rest of the interview.
While browsing on internet, I came across Dominic Barker trust- and these touching lines:
The fund is in memory of a witty, intelligent and much loved young man for whom the burden of stammering was so great that he took his own life. Here is the link.
