Stammer Stories: Jaipur Comm WS: Atul Singh Sainger

Hello all! I developed stammer when I was in 3rd or 4th standard. And by 6th I became fulltime stammerer. Bunking schools in oral tests, persuading friends to attend my roll call, Literally avoiding each&every situation where I have to use my speech. Became quite silent person, cause I know if I’ll speak I’ll stammer, and if’ll stammer rest of the world with their arsenal to fire their advices, cures, “Nuskha’s”, and more over their tease. I was just fed up with everyday advices like be confident, don’t get nervous, pull your tongue, stretch it (like it’s a rubber band huhh).
I grew up with advices like”muh me kalimirch rakha karo” & all that crap. By the time i passed +2 I became quite a stubborn. Since I joined TISA in august 2014, and met with Sachin Sir, my perception towards my stammering changed completely. I no longer feel as stammering is a problem for me. Its more like a part of me. I have many awsm frnds like any other random guy, I enjoy life like any other random guy and the best part is people focus on what I say cause of its content & not how I speak. Stammering also helped me improving my writing skills. Yes It may sound funny but due to my stammer only I focused very much on what to say and which word/language to use, so much so that I can now proudly say that I'm an okay okay type poet/shayar or whatever.... The point is I feel that It is because my stammering only that I am the Atul singh which u all know. If I wouldn't stammer I might have been a completely different person and might be not better than I am today. Stammering not only effects your speech, It effects your thoughts, your body language, your nature and in my case your soul too. I feel like me and my stammering are kind of made for each other. We often compete with each other , every time I have to give any presentation in my Institute.  And I quite enjoy that.

How to interact with people with stammering

There is a scene in Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam where the protagonist is trying to buy egg (Kozhimutta in Malayalam), but ends up in buying cauliflower. This scene is a very good representation of the problems faced by stammerers. The shopkeeper is in a hurry and asks him what he wants. He struggles and a lady standing near him laughs. He struggles again and the shopkeeper shows his impatience. This compounds his problems and it becomes almost impossible for him to say Kozhimutta. In the end the shopkeeper decides to help him by completing his word and asks him whether he is asking for cauliflower. He thinks enough is enough and decides to buy cauliflower!

If you are thinking what all need to be taken care of while interacting with a stammerer, this scene gives details of what all should not be done! Recently I read somewhere that a person, who is dumb, is usually treated with much dignity, but a less severe problem of stammering, in comparison with dumbness, is usually ridiculed. Most of the time the people who laugh at stammerers do not understand how much it affects the self esteem of the person. He is struggling to convey his thoughts and when he faces these situations he goes into a shell and dreads facing the world. Please give them the same respect that you give others.

Please be patient while interacting with a stammerer. Please listen to him and maintain normal eye contact. Do not allow your expressions, words or acts convey the message that you are becoming impatient. Let him take his own time, but never advise him to slow down or take a deep breath. All these will only aggravate the situation. If the situation becomes friendly, he also will become relaxed and speak better.

In some cases you might get a feeling that you should help the stammerer by completing his words or sentences. Please don’t do that. It will give him a feeling that he failed in conveying his ideas and will affect his confidence. Let him finish the sentence and if you couldn’t understand what he told, please ask him to repeat. It is much better than supplying words. In some cases, in order to escape from the situation, he might accept the word supplied by you, even if it was not what he meant! That is exactly what happened in this scene. The shopkeeper was impatient and he decidied to buy whatever he suggested.

Please treat stammering just like any other disability. Please give them some space. They will also become comfortable with the situations and lead a normal and dignified life

How to manage Stammering ?..?

My observations and conclusion on stammering after meeting many fluent and trans-fluent PWS during participation in TISA activities since 1.5 Yrs:

Where is Problem ??

Our Stammering is also like our computer - Having 2 part - software and hardware .

HARDWARE part include neck, tongue, vocal organs, jaw, facial muscles, breathing apparatus, neurological blockage
and
SOFTWARE part include breathing pattern, speaking pattern &  wrong emotional reaction pattern.

HARDWARE part : during speaking , PWS impose a great tense or “tightness” on neck, tongue , vocal organs, jaw, facial muscles or on  mind(mainly neurons). Breathing pattern also gets disturb.

In SOFTWARE part, Stammering originate and/or increase due to our wrong pattern of speaking, breathing & thinking since childhood , which is “programmed” in our sub-conscious and un-conscious mind. Now became a habit.

What should PWS do?

Speech Therapy By Hritik Roshan

Many Indian PWS are eager to know- what hritik roshan is doing or have done for speech.
I tried to add so many video clips of Hritik’s Interviews , in which he told what he have done or doing till now for speech.

SPEECH THERAPY BY HRITIK
Hritik used to read newspaper  loudly, he used to repeat long Bollywood movie  dialogues.
He took each and every alphabets and practiced it with varying volume and pitch.
On whatever word, he got block, he repeats it 10,000 (ten thousand) times with different volume and pitch.

Bangalore SHG Aug 31, 2013 meeting report

We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfillment.
Greetings all,
Hope this finds each one of you healthy, wise and joyous. The weekend at the SHG was in good spirits with Piyush taking the baton of organizing the session. The session took off at 1430 hrs with the crowd set in and moods aligned. The first in the agenda was introduction which went on for a little above an hour with the members sharing something interesting in addition to the primary intro. At 1545 hrs started the Fun Game that Piyush had thought about for the session. The game was about passing on the smiles which involved the members to go about with telling out aloud the numbers but shouting out a smile at the repeated number 7.
