Random acts of kindness...

This was a short address in Hindi by sachin to set the tone for the next three days ; an appeal to view stammering - and everything else in life - in a bigger picture - of finding fulfillment by serving others - not as a favor, but as a service to our larger Self. Here is the text.

Dear Friends
For a change - Let me not talk about stammering!
Let us talk about happiness, rather. We all want to be happy. Even fluency is seen as a means to happiness and inner fulfillment. But very few of us really understand how to be truly happy. Quite often, entire lives are spent in that search! I too want to be happy so I have been reading and searching and trying.. all sort of things. Let me share today the big secret- how to be happy?
And the big secret is : Random acts of kindness!
This idea has been attributed to an American writer- Anne Herbert. But I think this idea is much, much older and is found in every culture, every country. We have just forgotten it, I suppose, under the burden of frenetic activity of modern life.
Let us discuss the first aspect: Random. Random means something which is unpredictable, un-calculated. In practical sense, it would mean- you do something RIGHT on the spot, without much pre-meditation or planning, without any cost benefit analysis. What is in it for me? Try and forget that question. If you cant forget, try and push it back for the time being at least..
Let me give you some examples and steps:
Be kind to people around you, people you meet; develop it as an attitude. If you do it, chances are others around you will follow the example, sooner or later. In practice, it means – developing empathy and thoughtfulness. You can smile and give your place to someone else in a cue or in the bus. In traffic, you can wait and let the other vehicle get in to the lane. Before eating, you can offer it to others around you. Use “thank you”, “may I please?” etc. more often and mean it.
Pay genuine compliment to your colleagues, even boss and strangers. Take a little risk, if that is what it takes. Write a hand-written note of appreciation to people who dont expect one! Praise your sub-ordinates and children around you. Used clothes, cookies, food and books can be given to people in need of them. The child in the neighborhood may be thrilled to receive unused toys of your kids. Visit people who stay alone.
Go to old folks home and read a book or just spend some time with people there. Dont agonize about: Will I be able to do it next week too? Volunteer to do marketing for them or do other chores for such people randomly. Take them out for a picnic or to an amusement park. At home, sometime, do the dishes or make the breakfast for a change. Express your gratitude in words and gestures. Dont assume that it is understood. Smile more often. Try and forgive people. Above all expect nothing!
Now, when you meet a stammerer, what can you do? Just listen with respect. Nothing more. When you meet strangers, do you expect to be told: Use this technique, talk like this, breathe like that? So, same here.
This kind of listening requires no training, no gadgets. You dont have to be a 'Board certified Listening Specialist'! But yes, this kind of listening requires some practice. You have three days ahead to practice, practice and practice.
Finally who could be kind? and to whom? Fingers may appear separate – but they are all united in one hand. We may appear as different individuals but at a deeper level of existence, we are all one. Random acts of kindness ultimately benefit us alone. When we know this- through long mindful practice, we are set free from the burden of egotism: What a great act of kindness, I did! Etc.
THAT is the final state of skillful & liberated action. Let us strive towards that worthy goal, as a community.
I close, with best wishes and deep appreciation for your presence here for the next three days.
Thank you,
