Are we so gullible?

I have been sent an email by a young PWS from a metro. He shares his therapy
experiences. It seems that a therapist in this metro-city uses almond oil to
soothe the sticky tongues of stammerers! (reminds me of snake oil and quacks)
Here are other things he does:
1. Hypnotises the client for 20 minutes and gives suggestions like- you are
flying, you are talking fluently etc..
2. Then he applies almond oil with a cotton bud..
3. He charges Rs 1000 for a session as above lasting about 45-50 minutes
4. His consultation fee is Rs 500 in addition, in the first visit..
5. He does not do or teach anything else in these sessions...

I have posted it - not to point fingers but to warn other IPWS; The old adage
still holds true: the fool and his money soon part company. My advice to young
people is: browse on Internet; lot of helpful information is available for free.
Set up a self help group and help yourself. Ask TISA for guidance, if you need.

Here is the email, I am referring to:
"..he charges rs.500 for consultation and rs.1000 per session
Each session consist of 20 minutes and in that he hipnotisous the patient and
then gives him some imaginary thoughts like flying in the air, your talking
fluently,your feeling fresh
after the hiptonism he calls for badam rogan oil of haward company and ear bud
and with the help of ear bud he applies badam rogan oil on your tongue and at
the gums of your teeth and then tells you to do certain tongue excercises lik
moving your tongue where the oil is rotating it up and down and with the help of
a machine he loosens your chin, lips, throat .The feeing of the machine is such as
when you kill flies..."

Events happened in the Bangalore SHG meeting on 10-Oct-2009

Written by Praveen Kumar

This week we met on 10-Oct-2009 at Cubbon Park. Though we usually meet on Sundays, we selected a Saturday as most of the people were not available on that Sunday. I reached the place by 10:15 AM and Amith was already waiting there for me. Karthik called Amith and told that he would be late by 45 minutes.

Then we both planned to start the session. I just described the events that happened in the last week. Amith asked me to talk by widening the mouth and to speak a bit louder. Then he gave me some tips that he used in his life for controlling the stammering. After some time Karthik joined us.

We decided to move to a Hut nearby. Every one self introduced themselves. Karthik used bouncing technique. I got tensed while doing self introduction and then Amith asked me to relax. Then each of us talked about some topics for a few minutes. Amith described about the conversation he had with Sachin on 8-Oct-2009.

After sometime, again it was my turn to talk and I was in the same tensed state as before. Amith asked me to use bouncing technique. He explained me about the Technique with a demo. Then each of us talked about the plans for Diwali celebration. At last we played a word game. The session was very much useful especially for me. Both Amith and Karthik explained me all the wrong things I do while talking. From their experience they shared many Tips.

Bangalore SHG meeting on 2-Oct-2009

Written by Subhash

We SHG members decided to meet on October 2, 2009 at 10:30 am. Since most of us were available, Amith had arranged to meet on Friday. It was raining for last few days, so we decided to meet in an enclosed place. The venue was Sudheendran’s house at Marathahalli.

It was drizzling the whole night and was cold early morning. I decided to bunk the meet since I had a reason. So I called Karthik to inform about my unavailability for the meet. But he insisted me to come saying it would be really useful and beneficial. Really it was. Amith and I reached Sudheendran’s place. Karthik was already there. Naveen joined few minutes later. Sudheendran had neatly arranged the place for our meet.

We five of us (Sudheendran, Karthik, Amith, Naveen and I) started the meet at 10:45. We had discussion on several subjects. Initially we introduced ourselves and about the speech technique we had followed last week. Karthik briefed us about the call he had with Sachin. Sudheendran told us how and with whom all he was following the bouncing technique of speech. He was too good at it. We were amazed seeing him follow this technique. Even on call with Naveen, he was using this technique. Naveen shared about how he had spent his vacation with his friends. He had also gone to art of living classes. He had done a speeding bike with his friend from his native (75 kms from bangalore) in 40 minutes. Amith said about his interaction with his friend in Hydrabad and how happy his friend was for him. He opened up and told about his life before getting a job and how his Hydrabad friend had helped him in those days. He was very much grateful to him for the help.

I said that I stutter when I am nervous. We had a mock interview session where every other in the meet interviewed me. There were all sorts of questions triggered at me. Some questions put me in a miserable state. But the interviewers then gave me a good feedback on how I should have dealt with such questions/state. The difference between ‘try to do’ and ‘shall do’ was explained

Afterward we mocked at each other. Then we reached upon what action items each one would take the coming week. I said I would interact with all the peoples in our team. Karthik promised to practice the bouncing method. He said he would call Sudheendran and interact with him. Sudheendran said he would start his meditation, which he had discontinued for a while. Naveen promised to practice his deep-breathing technique. The meet ended at 1:15 pm

The session was very much productive. Everyone is standing for each other’s cause. This is a platform where each one of us is in the same page and would be able to understand the difficulties each one would face. Happier to be a part of this group

My life is based on a true story!!

Dear TISA Friends,
Over the years we bottle in a lot of emotions, which prevent long lasting recovery from our speech issues. Writing down our stories and sharing it with other like minded people is a well-known approach to healing, where sufferer (not the therapist) is at the center. Just check following stories to get an idea.

http://stammer.in/component/content/article/34-cat-info/187-my-stuttering-life.html
Also see, this one at ISAD 12:

So, coming to the point, TISA requests (“commands”) you to write your stories or reflections and share them with us. You may chose to write it anonymously if you wish and email them to sachin@stammer.in and sachin@rediffmail.com by 7th October .
These write up help not only the author but even the reader. They come out of their alienation and isolation. Don't worry about the quality or writing style. Pay attention to the content. TISA will do the necessary editing and brushing up. Looking forward to your stories..
TISA
